When you hear a car with the very loud supercharger whine, do you think it sounds good, or ricey/cheesy/lame?

My car's factory intake system completely muffles it. There are aftermarket setups that give you the full-blown...blown...noise. Not sure if I like it or not. Have been considering it for a while.

Not ricey at all. Refined and nice. Dad has a 2012 S5 with the V8. After driving and seeing the new S/C 3.0, he said sometimes he would rather that with the faint whine.

I like it..nice ride.

In a race/toy car - cool.

In a luxury car that I drive every day - annoying.

Installed polyurethane torque mounts on the Volvo T5 - very popular among the racer/tuner crowd, and the Volvo is known for wearing out mounts with regularity, the polys last longer, win-win, right?

Wrong...irritating on the drive to work or on long trips...same with performance intakes/exhaust...

edit: depends on the degree of change, of course, but I went back to rubber mounts on the T5 and I am keeping the factory intake/exhaust for the same reason... For a super cool sound, I roll down the windows on the V-12 and listen to the exhaust, but I want to keep the luxury ride/quiet in that car, so no boy-racer exhaust for me (besides, on an MB, they cost more than some of the cars I've owned...).

Look at it this way: Audi could have put that intake on, it probably costs less to manufacture than the complex airbox that works well in foul weather and keeps the sound level low...so, why didn't Audi go with the boy-racer intake? The answer is in the noise level, long-term customer satisfaction, and performance (most of these things add little in the way of performance...).

I've installed too many aftermarket intakes and bushings to do it again. One takes for granted the refinement that OEM stuff brings to the experience. If you like the whine, then have the whine. I personally would choose to not have the whine.

It's 100% a personal choice.

A Terminator Cobra with a bigger Whipple or Kenne Bell supercharger sounds awesome at WOT.

And fully agree on the Volvo mounts. If I had to do it over again I would have just got a stock upper mount. The stiffer lower mount for the trans is nice though.

I love S/C whine.
I really would like an 8th gen Civic SI with a supercharger. Would make an awesome DD. Maybe when I am not commuting.
The sound, so good.

Those Audis sound a little annoying due to the high pitch whine, but some of that could be poor sound quality from the video.

I like the sound of a supercharged Lightning though.

There was actually a Whipple supercharger kit for my truck available through Ford dealers, but it has been out of production for several years and is hard to find.

Maybe it's just the poor audio in the videos, but to me it sounds extremely annoying.

I always like the turbo whine or very faint woo sound when putting my turbodiesels under boost. But it is in no way intrusive.

Once you start getting into blowoff valves and whatnot on turbos (I've never had an s/c so I can only talk from a turbo pov), it starts to get ricey, especially if the exhaust and all start taking away deep throaty sounds for more high pitch.

I love it as long as it is bypassed at lower throttles. So you can make noise when you want to, just put your foot into it!

Sounds too loud and high pitched for my taste, but it's your car.

A little whine is okay. A lot is annoying.

Some folks with Cruzes and Sonics have gone nuts with intakes and exhausts on the 1.4T engine. Not my cup of tea. I removed the resonators ahead of the factory airbox to get a tiny bit of turbo whistle when accelerating. It's silent when cruising, so it's perfect for my tastes.

I think the later V6 Nissan products have about the nicest exhaust sound around. The "supercharger" sound to me is the same as that from an old tranny with straight cut gears.

My brother discovered this very thing with his 07 dodge dakota.
He has the HO v8(Hemi w/o the badge), and installed a magnaflow exhaust, only to find that:
a)the magnaflow made it SO loud he had to wear ear plugs inside the truck,
b) the factory exhaust was pretty much a straight tube w/ resonators. you could see straight through the "mufflers" from front to back.
He put the factory system back on, sounds like a normal truck again.

Sorry earlyre but no Hemis in Dakotas. 4.7 perhaps?

Dparm, it's purely personal. I cherish the near silence in my car as I drive noisy heavy duty trucks all the time. My car only barks when you stomp on it.

Pick what you like, but you may get a bit bored with that incessant whine.

Car already has downpipes and an exhaust. It's not whisper-quiet anymore. Intake doesn't really make it any louder when driving normally around town (like an exhaust does).

I just don't want to install this and have everyone who hears it go "that stupid-sounding Audi".

It would be fun for the first four or five WOT romps, after that just plain irritating.

cool, but I dunno if I would want it in a daily driver.

and to be honest a tame looking DD that whines, my first thought probably would be whats wrong with it?

when I got my ram 1500 everyone wondered when I was gonna put an aftermarket exhaust on it. Not gonna do it, the OE sounds good at higher rpms to me and is quiet the rest of the time. My brothers hemi has aftermarket exhaust including headers, sounds awesome, but to ride more than 15 min in it sucks.

like others have said its a personal choice.

I would get tired of the SC whine as a daily driver. Might be fun at a track for a couple of runs but after that it would irritate me. I was in traffic beside a mini cooper S on sunday after about the second red light I was thinking "Quit your whining" mad . On my turbo volvo you can only hear a slight turbo spool. Very subtile even with a tune. I would say SC whine falls into the ricey/tacky catagory IMHO.

pretty much what i suspected/assumed, according to him, my brother (the truck's owner), "it is a hemi, that's why its labeled high output"

personally, i thought if it was a hemi, dodge darn sure would have slapped a hemi badge on it....
but what am i gonna do? spend all day arguing with my brother? i think not. just smile and nod...

My Regal GS runs 13.70-80's. Silent until you go WOT. The M90 has a nice growlely whine to it. Suprises a lot of people and when crusing silent as church mouse. I love it.
You couldn't hear it until I changed out the air box. Now you only hear when you lay into it.

Same here on my Caprice. The supercharger is pretty well silent until you get into boost. Holden put nearly no baffles in the CAI on the L67 in Holdens. 10lb pulley makes it come in that much earlier now, but still nothing at regular operation...can be heard outside the car at considerable distance I'm told

My Nissan turbodiesel has always had a pleasant whine when working, like overtaking or hills, somehting to let you know that the 15psi boost is with you

After sucking some water through the stupid factory intake area (passenger side wheel well), I fitted a snorkel. While I love it, and it is worth maybe half a gear, it roars (like the Adam West batmobile) at times when it really starts moving air.

I can't say I really like the SC sounds in those youtube clips. I think the exhaust isn't loud enough to balance out the whine? I really like the noises a SC'd Elise makes with a "sport" exhaust but I guess it would be too much for a luxury DD.

Not my favorite sound to hear driving around.

My wife/I got to borrow a CTS-V wagon. Incredible car but did not love that whine in that otherwise strong sounding motor.

Sounds cool. I remember along time ago I was at a race track and there was a chevy that had a awesome whine coming from the supercharger. That's all you heard till it past then you heard the exhaust system.

Exhaust or intake noise can be very pleasant.

Any other engine noise means inefficiency, or not optimal design.

I like it. For a very short while I had a SVT Lightning, and loved the whine. That thing held up to a lot of abuse very well other than door welds breaking repeatedly and a persistent differential drip. Great vehicle, if totally pointless.

The Vortech I had in my LS400 had a pretty nice whine to it. Nothing like a super-loud V1, but nice nonetheless.
I don't see anything ricey about forced induction except for the kids in Volkswagens who put loud blow-off valves on them.

I don't see anything ricey about forced induction except for the kids in Volkswagens who put loud blow-off valves on them.

Have you ever seen high boost/high HP car with quiet BOV? I haven't. As of me, I like BOV "whistle" sounds. SC constant whine is annoying.

I know. I'm talking about kids who listen to dubstep or hip-hop in their stock Volkswagen 1.8ts with an HKS SSQV or TurboXS RFL blow-off just chirping all over the place. "But it's also got a chip, yo! It has like 350 pounds of torques, yo! Stage 2 bro!" Yeah whatever. Since when have the neighborhood mosquitoes in their VW turbos been high boost or high HP? Never. Same goes for the kids in their $500 Hondas with $250 eBay turbo kits.

That sounds a lot better, but still a little high pitched.

The Vulcan is kind of a vacuum cleaner with a s/c, but I'd still like to have one.

How much power does the Ranger make? I could not read it.

I'm not sure how much that particular truck makes. The Whipple kit was advertised as 230 hp / 260 ft. lbs., but with a more aggressive tune and some other mods it's easy to go above that. It's not a ton of HP, but it's more than any factory Ranger and was covered by the factory warranty if dealer installed.
