I may be in the market for a small fuel efficient car if I get the new job that I have applied for. The drive is approximately 70-75 miles one way. I had thought about an Aveo, but I would like to purchase something with a timing chain as opposed to a timing belt. Which compact cars (prefer domestic but am open) come with a timing chain?

If you're looking under the hoods and see a plastic side motor cover with about three fasteners, there's a belt under there.

A metal cover with a gasket and 20 fasteners, to hold the oil in, has a chain.

When you get down to the nitty gritty, look up your prospective engine on rockauto.com (or the manufacturer website-- but rock auto will be faster) and try to buy a belt or chain for it. wink

Chains seem a little more common now than the late 90s. Belts are about a 105k service item now; you may save more money getting a car with a belt and reasonable 14-15 inch tires compared to blingy 18s for example.

Toyota Corollas with the 1.8l 1ZZFE since 1998 have had chains. 2011 Subaru 2/5l H4 just went to a chain.

Here's the list for Toyotas. We have a 9th gen Corolla and really like it. Easy to work on, easy to maintain and gets very good highway mileage.

Every 4 cylinder in toyota's lineup has a chain these days.
The last 4cylinder belt engine was the 5sfe in the camry and solara IIRC.
Since around 2002-ish?

Most manufacturers are switching to chains so they can remove the cost of the timing belt replacement from the maintenance cost of the vehicle, and to make smaller engine packages.

Personally, I prefer timing belts.

Will this new company pay for your gas ?

Some companies will pay $0.50 per mile if you live X amount of miles away past a certain limit..... but many people do not know about that benefit.

The 2.4L 'Twin-Cam' Quad4 decendant in our '99 Malibu has a chain. Drives the waterpump too. That will be a fun one to change.
