Hi,
What do you guys think of peak motor oil vs castrol gtx? I know peak is much cheaper and always on sale, so I am skeptical of it (maybe for nothing)?

I don't like Peak. The specs in the data sheet show it to be subpar compared to bigger brands like Castrol.

It's made by Warren like Supertech(well bottled).

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1424197

Spec's taken from another thread against PYB.
Pennzoil YB 5W-30 / Peak 5W-30
Flash Point: 216 / 206
Pour Point: -39 / -39
Viscosity @ 40C, cSt: 63.9 / 55
Viscosity @ 100C, cSt: 10.5 / 9.94
Viscosity Index: 158 / 169
NOACK Noack volatility, %: 14.5 / 14.5
HT/HS Viscosity, cP: 3.0 / NA

Castrol GTX 5w30
FlashPoint= 220/440
Viscosity @ 100*C CST = 10.6
210* F = 62.1
TBN=9.5

Peak is thinner than the GTX by a bit.

The NOAK for 10w-30 is 15.2. If that's not a typo, that's some crummy oil!

Where did you get that TBN from?
That's almost too high to be true. I checked Castrol's website and their product data sheet doesn't list the TBN.

Er wait, thats the info from 03. [censored] old VOA one sec. I checked their PDS and MSDS sheet but they don't have much info on them. Trying to track down the info for GTX.

I think Peak will work perfectly fine if you keep the ocis reasonable. That said, unless you find it at a really good price then I would go with a name brand. A 5qt jug of Quaker State at Wally World is under $10.

I've used Peak 3 times thus far with no issues to report. I do however prefer GTX, personally.

GTX would be the better quality oil, and imo, I'd pay the extra money for it if it was between the two.
