Hi all, just wondering a few things regarding to Kendall oils.

Firstly, what are the general thoughts on the Kendall range, and I was told that there is a story that goes with Kendall. Something about how the Kendal it is now is only via naming rights, and the original Kendall is called something else? Anyone help with this?

I remember Kendall for as long as I can remember. Over 50 years ago, when people were changing their oil at 1000 mile intervals, Kendall came up with the slogan, "The 2000 mile oil", and the picture on the bottle was of a hand with two finger sticking out. (2 fingers for 2000 miles).

I remember the Kendall name since at least 1954, perhaps earlier.

BTW, what ever happened to Wolfs Head Oil, which I often used?

Right, Conoco-Phillips now owns the Kendall brand. The old Kendall refinery is now owned and operated by another company who's name escapes me now.

Wolfs head is still around. HQ in Tampa, FL.
Brand is owned by someone else, though.
IIRC, both Wolfs head and Kendall were concidered 'botique' oils back in the day, before there were botique oils.

IIRC, Warren Oil now owns the old Kendall refinery. I fondly remember Kendall GT-1 20W-50. It was green and the brand of oil used by my hero "Big Daddy" Don Garlits. I guess those two statements really date me!

I thought that the American Refinery Corporation owned the Bradford refinery. They manufacture Brad Penn oils which are made from 100% pure Pennsylvania crude oil.

I think you are right and I did not remember correctly. Funny how that happens when you get older.

So what sort of reputation does the Brad Penn oils have?

How do they stack up to the rest on offer

I have used them and still use them to this day. IMHO, they are just as good as the rest of the pretroleum products out there. I also get a warm and fuzzy feeling knowing that I'm getting oil right from my own "backyard" so to speak, as they do have the customary PA crude "smell" of sodium content in them. Lastly, I drive by a dealer on the way to work, so convenience is a REAL plus.

Pricing is par with everything else, if not a little better, as I do haved to buy it by the case, but after the last time I saw PPQ's at the parts stores, I about fell over and feel MUCH better about my boutique oils, as the price gap has narrowed considerably.

I'm using Kendall GT1 5w40 synthetic in my BMW. I was
a real big fan of Kendall over 30 years ago. The GT-1
used to be green back then. I got my brother hooked back
then and that is all he uses. He wanted me to try it again
so I bought the 5w40 to make him happy.

I will try my best to give a quick history lesson about PA oil companies.

Originally you had Pennzoil, Quaker State, Wolf's Head, Kendall, and Amalie all located in PA.

The Pennzoil Company bought the Wolf's Head Company sometime back in the 70's and Kendall and Amalie merged together by a company called Witco. Then The Pennzoil Company bought Quaker State Oil Company to form the Pennzoil/Quaker State Company and they still made Wolf's Head oil. Witco sold the Kendall name to Conoco/Phillips and Amalie moved their operations to Tampa, FL. Witco then sold the Bradford Refinery to American Refinery Corp where they now make Brad Penn and Gulf oils. After Shell Oil purchased the Pennzoil/Quaker State Company, they sold the Wolf's Head name to the company that owns Amalie in Tampa.

The current Kendall GT-1 is not green. The only green oil that I know of from all of this is the Brad Penn Racing Oils.

If you do a google search for Amalie and Wolf's Head you will see that they have the same address in Tampa and the same contact names.

All very confusing, but that's where we are at today.

The "green" Kendall that many old timers talk about is now Brad Penn oil made by American Refining Group in Pennsylvania

The Kendall name was bought by Conoco Phillips a few years ago. The Kendall you see on the shelves today is basically the same as 76, TropArtic, Conoco, Motorcraft etc. They are all Conoco Phillips oils with similar specs and are very good oils.

If you are wanting to use Kendall, buy whatever one of the above brands you get for the best price ...you are basically buying the same oil.
