Ryan Newman bar - 02/22/20 04:16 AM

So we all are using the petty bar. Then came the Earnhardt bar. Now look what could have been.

The Newman Bar!

This is the crash that inspired Dale to strengthen the roof hoop.

SRT do you have a link or pic to the Mark Martin bar?

Re: Ryan Newman bar - 02/22/20 05:14 AM

After searching the net it looks like Ryan was actually hit from the rear while inverted.. I have to assume that the main vertical hoop was hit. Not much back there for protection.

Re: Ryan Newman bar - 02/22/20 06:04 AM

I'll have to dig.

But the gist is, at Capital Speedway WI, he was involved in a crash where the left front suspension/tire was pushed back into driver compartment and crushed his lower legs. He got pretty messed up. I think this was in the early- mid 80s.
There is now a bar that must be there to prevent this, called Mark Martin bar.

I have seen pics of it on FB, but a quick google search didn't show anything.

I believe the Mark Martin bar is a side/door bar initiated after he hit the was at Michigan at a separation in the wall on pit road. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2jzwZSBEUo
The car in the above pic doesnt look to be from a Cup or Xfinity car since it appears to have an OEM frame. Likely a local series with much less strict safety rules.

it was in 1995, in the (now discontinued) NASCAR Sportsman Series.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASCAR_Sportsman_Division_(1989%E2%80%931995)
"The NASCAR Igloo Sportsman Challenge is a discontinued NASCAR division. It was created by Humpy Wheeler in 1989 to give short track drivers superspeedway experience."
"The series used former Cup/Busch series cars that were mainly run from the mid-1980s to early 1990s, and the year range for eligible cars grew each year. The wheelbase and tires were the same as the cars from the mid-1980s to 1990, but the horsepower was reduced from 700 to 350, which was the horsepower of a short track car. That way, the drivers didn't have to get used to new speeds."

here's local news coverage of the wreck:(I'll link but not embed)

Incorrect. The Mark Martin bar is what I described and came about before he was in Nascar. I am 100% on this.

Racing of all types have new safety features incorporated into the regulations and vehicle/ helmet/ driving or riding suit design, due to on-track incidents. Especially when those incidents involve fatalities.

Re: Ryan Newman bar - 02/22/20 06:45 PM

Maybe Mark Martin will chime in and clear this up ?

I dont see anything in any searches and I have listened to every one of his podcasts and never heard him mention it. I do recall him talking about a wreck where he hurt his legs when he was running ASA. If you find anything more please share it, I would love to know more about this.

Even though it was expensive, I didn't mind going to Sube Sports and the Simpson store to buy my new safety gear.

Re: Ryan Newman bar - 02/23/20 08:11 AM

Bd yeah we always kept up on the latest gear as well. Good friend caught fire after getting turned around in front of 31 alky mods. Corner workers couldn’t see it but thank god another driver got out and pushed him into standing water way down low in turn 4 drainage. Car was a total loss and he recovered and went on to be a Wissota national champ. After that deal we all had fire bottles!
