I was just being silly - didn't mean to offend you, bud!
What I meant, is that everything I would have suggested was already mentioned.
I do have one more thing to add, and it's an obvious one: my maintenance regime depends a lot on how often we use the washer. When it was just the wife and I, we had issues with our top-loader stinking pretty frequently, even AFTER using the cleaning cycle and bleach every so often, AND a dehumidifier in our small basement with the washer.
Reason: likely, because we didn't wash often and were using cold cycles 90% of the time.
After having kids, we run the washer a LOT more. Go figure, it smells fine all the time.
I run the self-clean function every few months, when I remember, but don't add anything to the wash, per the instructions.
If I didn't have a dehumidifier in the area, I'd place a small fan in front of the just-run washer, to keep it dry until it's needed next.
