I'm looking to buy an SSL certificate for my WordPress/WooCommerce site. SSL prices vary so much that I find it confusing to know which company to purchase one from.

The WooCommerce site ( http://bit.ly/2rqdwnq ) lists NameCheap ( http://bit.ly/2bxBXTR ) as an SSL provider, and their prices are excellent. But, because their prices are SO good...I'm leery.

Is NameCheap just a good deal, or am I overlooking something? How do you know what to look for when purchasing an SSL cert?

Thanks!

Ed

I've been using Namecheap for domain hosting for 3+ years now. They are a legit operation and very reliable.

The big guys go with Digicert or Verisign.

Every browser that goes to your website and does SSL server authentication will need the root and any intermediates for the CA that signs your personal certificate.

That's the way SSL authentication works.

I am in the process of installing the root and intermediate certs of a not do well known CA into the mainframe I support.

if it's just for SEO, then the cheapest or free certbot will do. After that you need to enable Strict Transport Security and get on Chrome pre-load list.

If you are building a commerce site, that's a different game altogether.

Big guys and big names don't guarantee best practices.
Didn't big Comodo take a big misstep with their certificates a while back?
And aren't the practices of big Symantec as a root certificate authority questionable?
