Re: List an oil Additive you'd use / No Comments - 08/30/16 10:51 AM

Liqui Moly oil flush and Ceratec are the main additives I have used in my old TDI. If I had any oil leaks that were beyond economic repair, I would also used Motor Oil Saver stop leak additive.

If you are going to use oil additives, it is a good idea to stick to the larger engine oil companies and steer well clear of the back street snake oil mixers.

Liqui Moly MoS2 for the '25 & '70
Liqui Moly MoS2 plus Motor Oil Saver for the '37 (she's thirsty)
Used Ceretec once in the '70, but Liqui Moly advised it's formulated for newer engines.

Ceratec is better, as it contains both Moly AND Boron Nitride in a hexagonal form. I suspect the Moly is included because many non major brand or cheap conventional base oils don't include it.

Liqui Moly are the best oil additive company around, although they do not make additives for auto boxes and there are other companies in the US that make good fuel additives.

Bit of British culture for you.

While waiting for a train in a WH Smith's newsagent I found a "humour" book in a bargain bin. Titled something like "The Arthur Daley Book of Scams"

Arthur Daley was a British TV dodgy businessman character, with connections to the motor trade.

Flicked through it. The scams I looked at were plausible and some of them I'd seen in action in real life. Wish I'd bought the book.

In Arthurs bio, he was credited with inventing the nylon-shirt-in-the-gearbox trick. If I have another car with a failing gearbox (I once had a Marina gearbox which was mostly filings but continued to shift smoothly) I'll probably try it.

What about substituting a quart of regular oil with racing oil? For instance, if one were to use 4 or 5 qts of M1 0W30 with one quart of M1 0W30 racing oil, could this properly boost additives? Its about double the cost of a regular oil, so cheaper than many additives.

M1 0W30 VOA:

It's just a cheap thick oil that will give your battery and starter a real hard time in winter.

No Moly, No Boron, low detergents, so no way would I use it in my old TDI engine. The TBN is low for a Ca detergents only oil, so it is not going to be too good for a long OCI.

What amount do you use and for how many miles? I know what the bottle says but from the reports on here I see users putting it in the oil for for only a few hundred miles before an oil change. Do you put in the fuel as well? It's certainly reasonably priced.

Will be trying Nano my next change in a couple weeks, I would also use Rislone Engine Treatment as a flush/cleaner if necessary on a used car. Some of the claims they make, usage directions and marketing nonsense they spew are one thing - but their products do work as far as cleaning dirty engines, when needed.....

MMO : While I've used before , I believe SN+ D1 / Gen 2 oils are so good now that not much MMO can do for an engine.
Seafoam : I still use from time to time for 100 miles before an oil change .

Re: List an oil Additive you'd use / No Comments - 05/22/19 05:25 PM

As my user name suggests, used to be a huge fan of additives. Not as much these days, bc you can just change the oil for the price of a lot of them.

That said, I think some have real benfits - a moly additive like MolySlip or Liqui-moly has been shown to help quiet engines and reduce wear.

I think for engines that suffer from noise or low OP, STP blue-bottle is a long-proven additive that 'boosts' up the oil a bit w/o doing any harm.

Just put a 15oz bottle in with my oil change, and engine is a bit quieter, bit smoother, and starts a bit quicker from improved cylinder sealing.

For the small price, not a bad product.

^^^ 100^^ upvotes. Todays motor oil does NOT need any aftermarket additives. The oil engineers have already added all the additives that a vehicle could ever need in todays oil. Whether, name brand or house brand conventional, semi synthetic or full synthetic oils as long as they have that starburst and API the oil is more than good enough and does not need a snake oil even if it is organic grass fed snake oil.

I honestly think Lucas oil additives are pretty good oil additives. Though I have heard clams of Lucas oil additives messing up peoples cars I have saw in my own car that I actually get 25% better fuel mileage than before.

I don't believe any oil additive can make 25% better fuel economy. Not even going from straight 60 weight to a 0w20 would make that much difference.

Look back at this poster's history, it has been a record of nothing but post after post for additives. He's been questioned about it before by myself and others but never returns to any of those questions to discuss his posts.

And you're right that no additive can give that kind of improvement. You can't change the laws of physics with an additive, even if you buy it at Dollar Tree.

I think this poster has been around before and it's not his first rodeo at Bitog.

A small bit Redline Break-In to push minimally ZDDP and fruther little bit Penrite "Racing Zinc Top Treat" to push - aggregate - my 9xx ppm 229.5/502 oils, to ~12xx zinc. Ergo, not really much, but fine wink

In my opinion those new gubbings from Penrite is yet a best oil add stuff then I have ever use.

You have to remember that my car was sitting in a field for 5 years, so my engine has had a little strain too. Some of the parts were probably gummed up, and that is what probably got my from 18 mpg to 26 mpg. My engine was probably just that dirty. It probably wasn't the additive itself.
