Recently I started seeing HX-8 5W-30 on sale. Was wondering the differences between HX-8 and Purpeplus, both are listed as synthetic.
My guess is HX-8 is using the XHVI base stock ?

We also get Shell HX8 5W30, it's a Group III synthetic, often at a good price. But I've never used it.

Ours is rated

I suspected the Noack is just over 10% which is why it's MB 229.3 rather than 229.5

I usually pay a bit more and buy the pure-plus GTL Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 or the MB 229.5 rated Castrol Edge 5W30 A3/B4 which carriers more ZDDP than the HX8 (SL Edge Vs SN HX8).

Or I pay a bit less and get the Castrol Magnatec 5W30 (SN & A3/B4) also a Group III synthetic.

I must admit that I always suspected that HX8 is punching above it's weight and may contain excess GTL base stock, but they don't upgrade the labels as they don't want to steal any of the glory from their top shelf Shell Helix Ultra oils.

Just guess ..... no solid data.

But at the end of the day it's a SN & A3/B4 rated 5W30 synthetic from a big company you can trust. I'm sure it will do it's job.
