A friend has to have this done. My question is: Is this cooler an oil to coolant heat exchanger or oil to air ?

Thanks.

It's probably both oil to air and coolant. I have an E-350 so it's the same engine. Have to replace both gaskets. It's very common for them to go. Gaskets are cheap, basically labor to take it apart. Basically a big hunk of metal with fins on it next to the oil filter and when you take it apart some coolant comes out too so you need to refill the coolant afterwards.

Typically with a model like the ML 350, it has the 3.5 M272 engine, if it were diesel, it's usually a different model like ML 320.
