This will certainly show my ignorance, but need help undertanding how an anti drain back functions on an oil filter.

If an oil filter is advertised as having an anti drain back feature, does this mean it prevents oil from flowing in the opposite direction of normal oil flow when the engine is running?

Thank you.

Yes. It's a rubber(like) flapper. Oil flow pushes it out of the way. It doesn't have to work perfectly. It only has to prevent rapid back flushing of the media ..hold for so many minutes. Some specify silicon ADBV to prevent startup rattle associated with an empty filter. Your cheaper filters tend to use nitrile ADBV which can distort or harden with heat and age. Any ADBV can leak..regardless of material ..or rather stated ..just because you pay for a silicon ADBV doesn't mean that you won't hear startup rattle.
