this was posted and discussed over at TDI club LINK and i thought it may interest the community here as well...

Nov05 - Thermographer gets Castrol 505.01 UOA results back from the lab. LINK
Fe = 230ppm, Fe wear rate = 19ppm / 1000miles, Soot = 1.88%

New OEM filter and Castrol 505.01 installed.

Recommendation was to drain the Castrol 505.01 early (after ~5k) in an effort to reduce the oil contaminant concentration, thereby reducing the contaminants that the new oil inherits, and then switch to ELF Solaris LLX 507.00. The rational was that 507.00 is held to the very highest anti-wear standard of any VW oil specification (same as 506.01) and its HTHS range is 3.50 to 3.59 (relatively high for a 30 weight oil). So, if any VW PD oil specification could help Thermographers situation - 507.00 was thought to be it...

Dec05 - Castrol 505.01 4,550 miles UOA results LINK
Fe = 47, Fe wear rate = 10.32ppm / 1000 miles

May06 - ELF Solaris LLX 507.00 11,353miles UOA results LINK
Fe = 45, Fe wear rate = 3.96ppm / 1000 miles

Cheers!
