What exactly does an oil slinger do? I had to replace a timing chain in my GM 1984 4.1 liter and I forgot to reinstall the oil slinger. It's running ok, but am I going to have some catastrophic failure down the road? Should I even worry about it?

I wouldnt worry about it, as long as the oil is changed frequently enough so that the pinhole that feeds oil to the chain doesnt stop up, it doesnt really matter.

You are certainly not the first person to forget the oil slinger. Assuming we are talking about the round, thin sheet metal piece that looks like a washer that fits around the crank it is intended to keep oil away from the front seal, to sling it off the crank. It is just intended to keep a majority of the oil away from the crank/harmonic balancer seal. Don't sweat it.

Thanks for the replies; I’m relieved that I don't have to tear it back apart.
