Here is a quick snapshot of the price components ( national average) of gasoline and diesel published by the EIA. It uses data from May. Enjoy.

Hi
Over here petrol is selling at £4.95 per imperial gallon of 95 ron and diesel at £5.30 per imperial gallon. That is supermarket fuel. Branded petrol stations will be more.

Tax makes up a whopping 72% of that !

Leaving the tax aside, in absolute dollars (rounded to the nearest penny) we have:

Gas Diesel
Crude oil: $0.64 $0.65
Refining: $0.26 $0.19
Dist/Market: $0.49 $1.00

Distribution and marketing is a catchall for various middlemen incurring costs and taking profits as a gallon of product moves from the refinery to the consumer, which is not taxes. Somehow it is twice as much for diesel.
