Best LL-01 Oil Right Now?

See pic attached
This is what the 2017 X5 manual says.
A non-FE spec is only a top off alternative.
Wonder how much of a difference is between LL-01 FE and LL-01 ?

No oil analysis is going to tell you anything more than what the approval already says.

The HTHS is lower for the Longlife-01FE oil and BMW has determined it is still adequate for the engine. It also has a slightly lower sulfated ash.

The reason it is worded that way in the picture you posted is so that the corporate fuel economy is kept at the required level. There is no mechanical reason for that statement in the manual.

The primary difference is the HTHS which impacts fuel economy.

LL01 is based on ACEA A3/B4 which has a min HTHS of 3.5

LL01FE is based on ACEA A4/A5 which requires a HTHS of less than 3.5 but not below (iirc) 2.9

Due to the lower HTHS LL01FE will never be found in a 40w.

Typo Correction: LL01FE is based on A5/B5

I hope there is no difference between LL-01 and LL-01 FE as these oils list "LL-01".

There is difference.

You do not need oil analysis. LL01 FE is fuel efficient oil. It is oil that is targeted for engines that are based on LL01 and LL04 specifications, but for North American market. Due to CAFE regulations one of the easiest ways to be in line with them is going with lighter oils. So, as other said, main difference is HTHS.

That engine is based on LL01 and was specified for LL01 and LL01FE. BMW probably decided to move to LL01FE due to compliance issues and testing for CAFE. In Europe those engines are still on LL04 specification (also min. HTHS of 3.5).
