Anybody able to shed some light on the difference between a silicone grease (such as commonly found in dielectric greases) vs a fumed silica thicked synthetic hydrocarbon (such as Nyogel 760g)? They seem basically interchangeable in my application (which is threaded and o-ring sealed, non-pressurized fittings). Does either offer any specific benefits assuming the o-ring is compatible (most typically a grade of nitrile)?

I would think the silicone grease would be more stable over time and likely handles moisture better. the hydrocarbon grease is likely to have better film strength for the same viscosity but I don't think that matters for your application.
