Slightly OT....shelf life of "boxed" oil containers #5445986 06/04/20 10:00 AM

Anybody have insight on the shelf life of these box containers? Do they have some type of plastic liner?

I know plastic bottles, jugs, and pails are very robust, I had quarts of the magic green Castrol 0W30 that I had hoarded for a decade and a partial pail of hydraulic fluid that came with my lift now of similar age.

I presently have two partially-used 6-gallon "eco-boxes" of Pennzoil Platinum sitting on a shelf in my storage unit, and they've been there for at least three years. I got them from an E-bay seller at a great price, so I'm guessing that they weren't new to him, either. The boxes are beginning to bulge a bit more than they did originally, but the plastic bladders inside them continue to hold oil, and the dispensing valves still worked the last time I refilled an empty 5qt. jug. I'll report back if/when they fail.

One thing that makes plastics brittle is direct exposure to the sunlight / UV. Since the plastic liner is shielded inside of a box, it should be ok for several years. If the box is stored in the shade, or inside a cabinet, it should easily last more than a decade.
I may be forgetting something so please point out where I'm wrong.

The plastic bladder will last as long as bottles did, the boxes themselves though, not as good.
I had a 6 gallon eco-box as well once and the box came pre-damaged. Had to tape it together.
When I had about 10 qts left in it, I just filled some clean empty 5 qt oil jugs I had since the box was falling apart and taking up a lot of space.
The bladder was still perfectly intact.

I think the smaller 6 qt and 12 qt boxes being sold now probably would last a long time if you can keep them from high humidity and don't move them around.
