Hi guys!

Air cleaners with a filter in the lid ( K&N, Specter).
good guy or bad guy?
What's the general opinion on these? Do they actually help? Or do they only look good?
Bad for the airflow? ( as air comes from 2 different sides)?
And then, if they are good, how good do these filter compared to regular paper?
Need a new filter assembly with a slightly dropped base for my chevy sbc ( 14X3 filter) and can buy edelbrock at quite a good price locally ( in europe).

either this :

this

or this

Happy to hear thoughts, and dyno results! smile

A lot of those questions cannot be effectively or accurately answered because they cannot be uniformly defined.- in terms relative to filter performance parameters.

Basically the more filter surface area- the better the flow:filtration ratio for the given media beta rating ( leading to better performance as far as air volume goes) so you can say they "help" over a boxed in housing ( defined as allowing more free available air on demand) but that comes with the risk of higher contamination also.

as far as compared to paper and all that- it depends on the specifics and combinations of the point being compared. ( that answer will be as long as it is wide and just as green as it is good tasting when held upside down)

One things for sure the chrome lid is going to look a lot cooler when you pop the hood.

Those are exactly the same technology as the stock air cleaner only without the outer walls on the can. Removing the outer can makes it more compact, maybe increased flow, but louder. And of course it's chromed, because chrome.

I can't think of any normally aspirated engine that needs more airflow than the solid lid type will provide. Besides, the solid lid allows you to apply cool stickers like the '60s muscle cars had! See pic below of the OEM replica air cleaner and stickers on a 396 I built nearly 30 years ago.

Unless you have a 500+ cubic inch engine, a regular 14" X 3" open element air cleaner is fine.

Filtration is my biggest concern with the cotton filters. Heard too many horror stories about them.
