Question about temperature

Up to what ambient temperature AMSOIL 10w30 oil will be okay with a Honda engine. I am asking because the service book cannot read the temperature correctly. Will the temperature of 30 degrees Celsius be still good for this viscosity or will the 10w40 viscosity be better?

Thank you for the information.

That is only 86F. Is that the real temperature you are worried about? What engine? What viscosity does the manufacturer advise?

This is Honda Goldwing Valkyrie 2014. The manufacturer recommends a 10w30 viscosity and 10w40 higher temperatures. Only the chart is illegible to me.

It is a water cooled bike, synthetic 10w-30 is fine as long as the cooling system is working.
Only time it may even be an issue is if you are sitting in bumper to bumper traffic for an hour in 100°F.
Your body would have issues before the oil would.

I had 2 GW's. Not as new as yours. I always ran 10w-40 but that is only worth 2 cents. High summer temp usually in the 90's.

Upload a snap shot or photo of the chart.

That must've come from the Honda Service Manual. It says you can use either 10w30 or 10w40 at any (all) temp.

If there is one thing a rider has control of its the viscosity of
their oil... chemically speaking either the 30 or 40 will meet and
exceed your mileage expectations... BUT according to Honda it is best
to use the freer flowing 30 over the slower flowing 40... engineer
tested the freer flowing 30 lubricates and cools critical engine
components better than slower flowing 40 oils can. Freer flowing oils
reduce bearing temperatures and sump temperatures compared to slower
flowing 40. Freer flowing 30 can also help increase horsepower and
miles per gallon.

I run a 30 grade all year because it gives the right flow at the
normal engine operating temperature of 212ºF and that would be the
viscosity of 10 at operating temps... so that means for every 1000
rpms increase of oil pressure increases another 10 psi... a 30 grade
flows more oil at higher rpms which flows more oil between the
critical bearings which carries away more heat and I'm not wasting HP
just pumping oil through the blow off valve... 40 grade builds pressure
at the expense of flow and I wastes HP by blowing oil through the
pressure relief valve...

Is this from a conversation with a Honda engineer for your bike or with a Honda engineer for the Valkyrie in question?

With respect I disagree with your analysis of the situation.

I think the graph speaks for itself with a bit of common sense applied...

The chart shows 10w30 as being a preferred oil at the lower temperatures but still fine for higher temperatures. By the same token, the chart also shows 10w40 as being more preferred for higher temperatures however because it's the same weight on the bottom it is no different than 10w30 in that regard.

Honda is saying use either one but it is false to read that they prefer 10w30 simply because it is on the left and the 10w40 is on the right side of the spectrum, which is the only way to come about that statement as I see it.

If this came about from a conversation with a Honda engineer, then that would be a different subject, however I don't believe anyone here has talked to a Honda engineer about Honda's oil recommendation for this bike.

To the OP: You have started a number of threads about this bike and the oil choice. Be assured you are safe with either one.

My 2011-2013 Honda CBR 600F specifies 10w30 Jaso MA oil only. No other choices given no temperature charts, nothing.

Flow is in... manufactures are trending towards recommending a single
viscosity of a free flowing 30 weigh for all their bikes... there will
come a day when they will not even mention the option of a 40...

Any one of 30 grade 100% synthetic motorcycle specific or not oils will meet
and exceed your mileage expectations...

Where are you located ... and how cold would it ever be when you take a ride? If you're not riding in super cold climate, I'd be choosing the 10W-40.

Without question then, choose the 10/40.
There really isnt anything to think about. Forget out the thread, Honda is telling you what you can run.

It is for the want of thinking that most rider's ambitions are undone...
