So I would like to do a permanent outside installation of a security light - see it here: https://www.stratusleds.com/module

No, they are not security lights but they are awesome.

I can build weatherproof housings.

I have 2 choices:

Mount light and run a 120v source to a 120v to 12v stepdown to the light
or
Mount the light and run a 120v to deep cycle charger that is hooked up to a group 31 or 4D battery - and run the light on that.

Both setups would be on a timer

would love to hear some feedback

Grab a small 12v automotive battery and hook up a float charger to it. No need for the timer then.

I put all my left-over automotive stereo stuff to good use as a garage sound system, powered by a little battery I replaced off a 2000 Acura Integra that turned out to be still good.

To keep it charged I plugged in a 3A max EverStart flor/trickle charger I found at Wally World for $25. It charges when it needs to and doesn't when it doesn't need to. It's even got a little LED readout that tells me how low the battery is if it's charging or displays an error code if something goes wrong trying to charge.
