Because of Standard Oil.

I and O are often avoided in engineering/IT because of the possible confusion with one and zero.

Where is the SI oil spec j/k
 
SO = Esso, still a big brand name in Canada and some other countries. In Canada, the Mobil name has been being actively introduced since 2017, usually in marketing deals with grocery stores but Esso is still everywhere.

API had stated that they skipped SI because it was an acronym for the International System of Units -- SI -- abbreviated from the French Le Système international d'unités.
 
You will see the deals on the SN stuff at the stores and the hoarders dumping their stash, who want the latest and greatest.
