Read this in the WSJ a few days ago. The WSJ article also indicated areas in which the Corp was increasing its capabilities.

Marine Corps 10-year plan

Current vs 2030

Unmanned aerial vehicle squadrons*

3 to 6

Missile/rocket batteries

7 to 21

C-130 aircraft squadrons

3 to 4

Fighter/attack aircraft squadrons†

18 = 18

Cannon batteries

21 to 5

Tank companies

7 to 0

Bridging companies

3 to 0

Infantry battalions‡

24 to 21

Tilt-Rotor aircraft squadrons

17 to 14

Helicopter attack squadrons

7 to 5

Helicopter heavy lift squadrons

8 to 5

Note: Numbers are for active military and does not include reserves. *Current squadrons are unarmed, and future squadrons will be armed and unarmed. †The number of F-35B warplanes in a Marine aircraft squadron is being reduced from 16 to 10. ‡The size of Marine battalions, which currently number about 850 personnel, is being shrunk by 15%.

Commandant directed.

Reduce the number of Marines, and re-equip for the Pacific threat.

We have an Army with lots of tanks. To be agile as the Marines move across the Pacific, tanks are useless.

WSJ did a good job on this reporting. PM is superficial.

Thanks for sharing the WSJ link. Much better article than what I posted from PM.

PM wasn’t wrong, just...thin...the WSJ had a lot more details and some interesting quotes from the Commandant.

Part of the reason for the reduction from 16 to 10 with the F35 squadrons is to fit on the amphibious carriers. Typically, 10 is a full load. I'm sure they could surge with more in certain situations, but 10 would be the target for a combat load. The F=35B dramatically increases the combat power of those ships and frees them up from requiring the protection of a super carrier.

Interesting stuff. I see the emphasis on unmanned systems, too. That's a major shift, in and of itself. It makes me think they've got some potentially stout anti-tank capability there, too.

Agreed about the tanks but not sure about wisdom of ditching Marine aviation. Combat close air support seems vital, and I've always thought Marines strongly preferred their own CAS, that only a Marine pilot is all-in, so to speak. I am not nor have I ever been military but several Marine veterans I count as friend and acquaintances have echoed the feeling that they want Marine pilots covering them if at all possible instead of USAF, and that this feeling was very common throughout the USMC.

Not really ditching Marine Aviation.

Reducing some squadrons, including those (CAS/Attack Helicopters) that will be of less use in the anticipated conflict, while keeping the high end airplane (F35) that can do CAS as well as a host of other missions.

CAS supplied by Drones in lieu of Helos? Of course the F35 was designed for CAS as well.

On a side not an old friend of mine who's a former Marine told me that the justification for their own air wing came out of Korea or Vietnam over an instance where a group of Marines didn't get air support from either the USN or USAF.

ROVs and Drones are the future of warfare.

If all of your fighting force are sitting in an underground bunker wearing VR headsets and remotely controlling fighting machines then you will suffer zero loss of life during conflict.

You can be killed whilst in a tank but you cant be killed whilst in a secure bunker underneath a granite mountian - maybe the armed forces of the future will be manned by todays kids who are the number 1 video game players..

Marines are light infantry and they need tank support. But if they are focusing on attacking Chinese islands then deployment of tanks doesn't make much sense. When China retaliates, tanks will not help.

I just don't know about ditching them completely. They probably will be stored.

Which is completely opposite, and utterly different than, the new USMC focus: the mobile, maneuver-centric, rapid deployment of forces across the Pacific Islands.

The USMC is preparing for the next fight.

Not science fiction fantasy.

I sure don't miss the days of having to do follow up missions behind the Abrams tanks. That is one bad MOFO!
