Sticking with 0w20:

Readily available:
1. Mobil 1 EP/AP 0w20 - majority PAO/AN - SA .8 - Noack 10%
2. Valvoline Modern Engine - Unknown base oil/SA- Noack 10% (likely low SA based on VOA)
3. Vavoline Full Syn - Unknown base oil - SA .97 - Noack 7.6%

Boutique:
Driven DI 0w20 - mPAO - SA .72 - Noack 11%

Is there any objective, recent documentation for the majority PAO claims on the M1?
I just bought 12 quarts of their esp 5W30 and think it's probably 90+% group lll.

According to the PDS of the oil, it's a low-SAPS oil

MSDS for the last several years has shown M1 0w20 EP & AP are 70% PAO.

No, the terms low-SAPS (SA ⤠0.5%) and mid-SAPS (SA ⤠0.8%) are often used incorrectly in the industry. C3 is a mid-SAPS category, and the SA for C3 is between 0.6% and 0,8%. Otherwise, it would have to be C4 (low-SAPS, SA ⤠0.5%) or both C3 and C4 at the same time. However, according to the PDS, it isn't. Therefore, it's mid-SAPS, with 0.6% ⤠SA ⤠0.8%.

The M1 AFE 0W-20 is currently half-PAO-based (with some AN) and the M1 EP 0W-20 is currently fully PAO-based (with some AN). For GDI/TGDI engines, go with the M1 EP 0W-20, not with the M1 AFE 0W-20, because the former (EP) has not only a higher-quality base oil but also a higher antioxidant content (for extended performance (longer oil life)), both of which are necessary for reducing the IVD.

The M1 AP 0W-20 is very similar to the M1 EP 0W-20 and possibly even a better choice, but it's a lot more expensive.

So would that be considered then a low amount for a mid-SAPS oil?

Valvoline 0w20 noak is 11%, the 5w20 is 7.6

How about the 5W30 ESP?

Both Valvolines have unknowns, as-does the 5w30 Ultra Platinum I'm currently using.
I will await the SP GF6 / Gen 3 oils coming out, before purchasing any more oils.

Thank you for the correction.

My top 3 gdi oil is to never buy a gdi again
crazy2.gif

Hope I can find mpfi in the future.
My wife liked our gdi. Other than that, all our other cars are mpfi.

As far as your choices , I like M1 EP. I use it along with PP in our gdi.
Summer M1 EP 10W30 & winter PP 5W30.
Some Chevron Supreme dino 5/10W30 here and there.
Recently bought some Castrol GTX Magnatec 10W30 for one older car but I may try it in our gdi once and see how it does.

Gokhan:
What are your thoughts on the Mobil1 AP 5w20 in my GDI Focus 2.0?....I scored a bunch of it at last years AZ 'Clearance'.
I know form your post last year that it's a majority GIII unlike it's 0w20 brethren. I believe the GDI is harder on oil than the PI 2.5 version in my Escape based on how quickly the GDI turns the oil dark (soot, I think). Would I be better off doing shorter 5K OCIs on synblends, or even 7K on Supertech syn., than 10K on more expensive syns in this GDI engine? Thanks

This is the tread from last year that I mentioned:

M1 AFE 0W-16: PAO-based

M1 AFE 0W-20: 1/2 PAO-based and some GTL
M1 EP 0W-20: PAO-based
M1 EP HM 0W-20: only a dash of PAO (less than 10%)
M1 HM 0W-20: 1/4 PAO- and 1/4 GTL-based
M1 TP 0W-20: 2/3 PAO and 1/3 Group III
M1 AP 0W-20: PAO-based

M1 5W-20: 2/3 GTL
M1 EP 5W-20: 1/3 PAO, a dash of GTL
M1 EP HM 5W-20: only a dash of PAO (less than 10%)
M1 HM 5W-20: 1/4 GTL, a dash of PAO
M1 TP 5W-20: 1/4 PAO
M1 AP 5W-20: 1/4 PAO

notice the thinner oils have good but not great noacks as even higher quality thin real synthetic base oils burn off faster, so i use either 5 or 10 w 30 "synthetics" + i do NOT own anything with DI on purpose!!

Maybe I'm wrong but I thought 5w20 syns. had better NOACK #'s than 5w30's?....now 10w30 syns. are another (better) story NOACK wise...
