I'm going to be honest. As long as I've been changing my own oil and obsessing over oil type and filters, I haven't been very good at changing the crush washer but I'd like to buy 10 to 20 in bulk. I have a Honda and Mazda and I believe they are very similar size bolts. Is there a certain brand or material (copper vs aluminum) or a good place to get them?

Typically when you buy Honda filters from the dealer, they include a crush washer in the packaging. If not, some will throw 1-2 in if you ask. Or, ask the price and when they tell you, counter-offer with "what if I buy (10)?" and see what they say. Obviously Amazon but pay attention because some listings will use the Honda p/n when they're not Honda OEM washers. On the other hand, how complicated can an aluminum crush washer be ?

I get mine from NAPA; I just used the last one and need to order more. I find these work best:

704-1973 (12mm copper) for Nissan and Toyota

263-870 (14mm aluminum) for Honda

Right. I think some skimp on material (thinner and not as wide) so you get less "crush" before you could potentially start stressing the threads.

9 times out of 10 I reuse the one that is there because either it's a rubber lined reusable type or because it's still in good condition.

Interesting. I have been using the same crush washer for years and so far so good not leaks. I must have a miracle washer.

Honda and Mazda do use the same M14 diameter aluminum washer for engine oil. I bought mine from RA in a 15 pack. Currently $0.37 ea. Look it up on their site and then compare to Amazon. Dorman p/n 095015

1) I find the aluminum washer in my last 3 cars (Volvos with the 5 cyl. engine) gets forced into a recess by the drain plug.
The deformation is distinct and not insignificant.

2) A pal actually made me some 18mm gaskets from bar stock. These are real thick aluminum and I flatten 'em with a sintered brass and diamond abrasive cloth just to "stick it to the man". It's a mixture of cheap AND practical.

3) These gaskets really do vary in material thickness and thickness of annulus. I can't speak to every application but the real flimsy ones don't look like they'd take to reuse. The copper gaskets which were in the Saabs hardly looked used upon removal. I dressed those as well.

4) I like the way the aluminum "gives" as you tighten it. You can't feel the "give" with the copper ones but it's there.

5) The neoprene gasketed washers are very reusable in my experience.

I feel reusing metal gaskets of this kind invites overtightening. That goes double for the "Folded type" like Subaru uses.

I take care of a Honda, a Mazda and a bunch of Toyotas. They all give me a washer with each oil filter I purchase. If I wanted to buy 10 of them at a time, I'd just go to the dealer.
