I have an automatic gate that has about 15 feet of chain that I think I should lube. It's looking a little rough.

Any ideas on what I should use on this? The gate operates all day during business hours. It rains a lot here and I would need something that won't drip down on to the pavement when its hot.

Thanks

I have zero experience with your request, but will start out the thread anyway! I would imagine that bicycle and/or motorcycle people will have good advice.

If that were my problem, I would figure out a way to clean the chain first. Either remove it or concoct a way to clean it as mounted. A bath in mineral spirits or WD 40 should do the trick. You probably should clean the chain annually or as needed.

Then, choose your chain lube of choice. I probably would avoid a graphite lube due to how dirty they are (black residue).

This one might work - water insoluble, goes on thin to penetrate, then thickens up, anti-fling: https://www.datocms-assets.com/10845/1562019086-specialistrollerchaintds.pdf

I'm interested on what others will recommend.

Try Bel Rea motorcycle chain lubrication,It has a waxy substance that will dry similar to a lightweight Vaseline type consistency ,last pretty good on motorcycles doing a hundred miles an hour to change shouldn't have a problem and it doesn't wash off easily.

Can be purchased at motorcycle shops or at Cycle Gear motorcycle accessories,

Local.purchase or to their web site.

Just apply some oil using a brush and repeat after every rainy day and you will be perfect. It won't drip if you don't use a ton. You can use used or new motor or gear oil. Your choice, it won't make a difference.
That's what I've been doing in my motorcycle chains for 6 years and 50K+ now. Zero cost, maximum protection.

This works well for me...

Sprayon Chain Lube

The link is not necessarily for purchasing. I got mine on eBay. This is just to show the product.

Whatever grease you use, i would spray it down with a 50/50 atf/ acetone mix and wire brush it , get all the loose rust off you can. Rinse with diesel fuel or old kerosene. Other wise the grease is going to hold all the rust that's flaking off now and it will eat up the sprocket and chain.

Couldn't agree more. Correct preparation is key in this case before applying the grease layer.

Motorcycle or bicycle chain lube - try Bel-Ray or Lucas for the former, and DuMonde Tech/Rock & Roll/Boeshield T9 for the latter.

Thanks guys. No way am I going to clean up this chain in any serious way 😁. I'm going to lube it up and hope for the best. It's a very old chain and has a bit of stretch. Eventually I will change it but wanted to care for it until I do. I seriously think the chain is from 1989
