Cracked pistons are somewhat of a known issue on the 270/274 engines, often at lower mileage. It is not a cheap repair.

Not necessarily.
These days it seems all the c class and e's are only equipped with 4matic.
Some of us would rather have RWD. Even the high performance AMG's all seem to be only 4matic for the North American market.

Pretty sure this one does. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a27813840/mercedes-amg-m139-four-cylinder-engine-specs/

As the OP has indicated, it's not about the performance numbers on paper.
It's about the increased NVH on a car model that used to be known for it's quietness and smooth execution of power.

Maybe, but wouldn't that go against the belief that our senses degrade as we age (i.e. hearing)?

I'd say that depends on where you live. Maybe in Canada, most people want 4 wheel drive (which is outstanding BTW) but here around Daytona Beach there are plenty of RWD versions available. Maybe NOT the AMG versions, they are prob 4-matic for a different reason.

I chose 4-matic because I like to take my car out on the beach! And I do make an occasional trip to PA in the winter, so to each his own.

Regardless, 30 to 32 mpg average with a luxury car AND 4wd is nothing to sneeze at!

To the OP regarding the "buzzy" engine. Make sure you don't have the enhanced engine sounds coming from the speakers. I'm pretty sure it can be disabled, but it is fact that a lot of automakers feel that we driver need to hear SOMETHING from the engine. A youtube review confirmed that this was part of the Mercedes sport package.

Are you referring to used or new MB's?

After searching Mercedesbenz.ca and .com (Canadian and US sites respectively) I got similar results (at least 90% with 4matic as standard equipment).
Seems silly and/or wasteful to me, especially for those southern states that hardly if ever see snow/ice

It's not just for snow and ice. Better handling in all conditions and also puts the power to the ground so not a complete waste. Plus I guess people from cold states can go south to pick up a rust free car although MB uses a lot of aluminium so you don't really get that much rust.
