It doesn't have to be a complete mystery, what does your owner's manual give as a required approval?

That has the N55 3.0L turbo inline-six. A great oil would be Castrol Edge 0w40, Mobil 1 0w40, or pretty much anything meeting the Porsche A40 spec, which is similar to BMW's no longer used LL-01 spec.

They recommend oils that belong to one of the viscosity grades SAE 0W-40, SAE-0W-30, SAW 5W-40, and SAE 5W-30 with approved oils like BMW High Performance and BMW Longlife. I was just wondering if there are any brands outside of BMW.

Grade is going to be irrelevant considering the BMW approval. Isn't it Longlife-01?

Longlife-01 approved oils are disappearing from the shelves, as has already been mentioned the Castrol 0W-40 with Porsche A40 and Mercedes-Benz 229.5 approvals is an entirely acceptable substitute. Mobil 1 0W-40 also has Porsche A40 and Mercedes-Benz 229.5 approvals, buy whichever one you can find cheapest at Walmart.

Would a A40/Dexos2 be low enough in calcium to be used in a GTDI engine?

Any quality syn. in 5/30 5/40 etc. We run the Fuchs 5/40. Cut the interval in half if its still counting 15k in between services, goes a long way. M1 0/40, castrol 0/40 etc. many good choices found cheaply at walmart or amazon.
