Hi folks,

So I have a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 surface tablet (128GB) that's sitting in my office. The original plan was to use it for our conference room so people can use that for our projector but only 1 person did in the span of a year so I decided to take the tablet away since nobody was using it. I liked KrisZ's idea of using their old iPad as a security camera feed but we wouldn't have a need for that since we have a receptionist. Now I'm trying to figure out what we can use it for; any ideas?

Thanks.

They seem to make a decent backup PC, that's what I would do with it.

I have a docking station for it but I have 4 laptops and 2 desktops as a backup right now that are better suited as a backup; half the firm uses CAD programs and the other half wants a full sized keyboard for all their reports and documents.

-Remote connectivity to those high-powered CAD stations while away from office.
-decent office station (MS office, Internet browsing, Email, etc)

The docking station and multiple monitors may go cuckoo from time to time depending on updates gone orange instead of apples.

I’ll give you $50 for it, most of my laptops are older than dirt!

CAD users are the only ones with a desktop - although they have company laptops for remote work too. Eventually they'll be moved to laptop-only too while we keep a couple very high-end PCs for the heavy duty tasks. (Yes I spoil our users with technology and my executive VP is a techy guy too so my budget is virtually unlimited!) A spare office station would be good, maybe something at the waiting/reception area for users to check out while they're waiting for their meeting.

That would be a good reason to test out the sweet new UAG case I got for it cool

What's the security like in your office. Many places use tablets for guests to sign in.

It's a high-rise office building so visitors need to check in at the front desk in the lobby first before proceeding up the elevators. We have a receptionist, but when she's not at the front then the doors are 99% locked and the only way in is via an RF card or a door bell where it's me that walks up to the door to see who it is.

Before hiring our receptionist we did have a couple events where strangers were walking around our office (even searching around an employee's purse once!) and ended up being escorted out but our staff is a lot more vigilant now after that happened. Still considering a security camera system though for the doors and server room.

Be thankful you didn't get suckered into buying a Surface 2 RT - another of microsoft's many orphaned products.

Funny you said that, our previous CEO had one of those in lieu of a laptop and when I started, that was quickly replaced.

I wouldn't leave that thing plugged in.

I'm an IT Equipment Coordinator for a large corporation, so I do the purchasing and distributing of all the computers.

The Surface Pro 4 proved the be absolute trash. We got countless of them back, the batteries swell up all of a sudden and push the screen out. Sometimes breaking the screen. Often times they won't boot, and will just say "Surface" but after a re-image it works. Another common problem is when the battery dies, it's hard to get it to come back up. Can't charge from dead on the docking station.
