Not sure what can be known about this, but I'm left wondering: if this is a heavy duty truck, does GM have to hit the same safety requirements as do passenger cars? IIRC vehicles with GVWR over 8,500lb did not have to hit the same emissions requirements; those obviously don't apply here, but I wonder if GM can bypass a competitive market (passenger cars) and get into something with less restrictions in the way. A heavy duty chassis probably easier to add weight to, plus a large body probably has space to kill for shoving batteries around in.

No automaker has ever made a consumer vehicle with anywhere near the 11,500 pound-feet of torque that GM is claiming for the Hummer EV.

That would best the strongest pickup engine available today by more than 10 times; the 2020 Ford Super Duty diesel is rated at 1,050 pound-feet. A Bugatti Veyron supercar with its quad turbo V-16 engine makes 1,106 pound-feet of torque. The Rivian R1T electric pickup planned to begin production this year is rated at 829 pound-feet.

Torque is a measurement of twisting motion. It's possible that GM's claimed 11,500 pound-feet rating is accomplished with gearing and multiple motors and is only available at low speeds, such as when pulling a heavy boat out of the water or crawling at 2 to 3 mph over steep inclines.

GM isn't saying whether that torque measurement is taken at the electric motor or at the wheels. Either way, it is sure to raise eyebrows at competitors and elsewhere. GM plans to reveal more this summer.

Wow, wonder how many pounds of batteries (not to mention recharge time) it will take to supply that kind of power?? What kind of tires could handle that? Giant drag slicks?

I will note that in the OP it states wheel torque. If you take the 1,050lb-ft from the Super Duty, 1st gear in the transmission is 4.615:1 and say it had 4.11:1 rear gears, that's 19,916lb-ft at the wheel.

Man, they really ruined GMC.

GMC used to be tough guy trucks and occasional rebranded weird cars. Now they make soccer mom mobiles.

When will they stop dragging GMC through the mud!

I actually agree. My wife's Terrain is soccer mom for sure. It's good for it's intended purpose but rather wimpy to be honest. She likes it though and happy wife happy life as they say, lol.

GMC hasn't been unique since the mid 1960's with their giant V6 engines, Before that they used Pontiac & Oldsmobile engines to set themselves apart from Chevrolet. The only reason GMC exists is to sell trucks at Cadillac & Buick dealerships.
