Got a guy coming to see my motorhome advertised for $5K who wants to trade his '13 E250 van with over 200K and some transmission problems. Says it still drives good. Looking at the options. A new Ford transmission is right around $3,000. No way. Having the transmission rebuilt locally, around $1000-$1200. Junkyard trany with 100-150K, around $800. I thought a used one would be a lot cheaper.

Tough to get good junkyard unit unless the vehicle wrecked at lower miles.
You're correct on that reman price too, not sure why it's so high a Chevy 6 speed is a grand cheaper with a 3yr/100,000mi warranty.
My take these days is that transmissions are the leading cause of vehicle death.
Who is gonna put a $3000 trans (plus labor for most folks) in a $5000 vehicle?

It better be a really nice '13 E-250 to be worth $5K with over 200K & a bad transmission! Full disclosure, I've looked at enough 3500 passenger vans lately to have a pretty good handle on values, & I'd like to know who would install & warranty a new Ford truck transmission for $3K. It routinely cost us $4-5K to have the older E4ODs rebuilt in the bad old days (late'90s) on our E-250 vans.

$600-$800 is about the going rate for a used domestic light duty RWD electronic 4 speed trans in working condition (4R70W, 4L60E, 46RE)

A 4R75W is kinda light duty for a E250.....Must have a 4.6L? If it's simply missing 4th gear, It might be a easy fix!

Logged 240K miles on 1997 E4OD and sold it to a cable contractor last time I spoke with him it had over 300K
One of the best Trannys I've ever owned

Yeah I'm surprised I checked all 2013 e-250s even with 5.4 come with the 4r75. I would have thought they came with the 4r100?

A couple of times I used Brandywine Motors (in Waldorf MD) for used transmissions. One was used 700R4 out of a Firebird with 70k miles- wrecked. Worked fine. The other was a 4L60 for a Chevy 1500 and it worked fine. They actually installed both for me. In hindsight I guess they were incredible risks, but it worked out 100%. Their labor rates at the time were quite reasonable, but this was 10-15 years ago so it may no longer be valid.

Probably had it re-engineered and working 7 years after its introduction.

A used one would be cheaper but you will probably end up rebuilding it anyway.

I checked with my local transmission shop and a rebuild runs between $1800-$2000 and that includes the torque converter.
