In DC area, a million dollars doesn't buy you a whole lot.

Look up houses for sale in different areas other than where you live. You might be surprised at the range or variety of what a million dollar house in different areas. Here's (2) examples of million dollar houses:

Considering the areas they are in, I'd take the one in Sioux Falls all day. Around here, that house would probably sell for about 45% of that list price, tops. The one in San Jose would sell for 10% of its list price.
Here's a local place... imagine what this place would go for in Cali... maybe $3 mil?
