Air Force Commissary (yes the commissary) may have potassium permanganate in the clearance section. I purchased all 16 units they had at the Hill AFB commissary yesterday, in the clearance section.

Commissary list price : $18.90 (I think this was the original clearance price)

Commissary clearance price : $9.90

Menards current price: : 33.23

Amazon current price: $38.95

This is a harder to find item- shocked to find it at the commissary.

I am surprised to see this sold at a military commissary as it can be used to make explosives.

What are you going to do with it?

Just to the left of the large blue pressure tank is a Water Boss Iron Filter. It requires about 2lbs of potassium permanganate per month. And the potassium permanganate has to be stirred weekly.

BTW- I need to remove iron before going to the water softer. Lots of iron is some upper midwest well water frown.

On a second note- I am a huge fan of Water Boss Softeners. Made in Ohio- so much better than almost any of the big box store name brand crap. Water Boss doesn't always get the greatest reviews about their customer service, but the person you speak to at Water Boss knows exactly what they are talking about. Call a name brand water softener brand from Home Depot, Lowes, etc... and after an hour you might get a call center person reading a script. An most of those name brands at Home Depot, Lowes, etc are just Chinese crap in really nice retail boxes.

And a bit off topic but I will promote Water Boss a little more.

Below is a pic of my Water Boss water softener in my current home (the other softener is in my retirement home), purchased at the Park City, UT Home Depot. It uses the same case as the Iron filter, but it is a traditional water softener.

My installation, using PEX A, allows the softener to me bypassed/ removed, replaced with zero disruption to the water supply. I use PEX A, and it was as easy to install as eating a pancake. My neighbors all have the same designed home, yet if their softeners fail they need to shut down the water supply to repair/ replace. Their softeners were all installed by professional license plumbers, who cut every single corner to maximize profit, and have to call them if their is a problem. In today's America- almost always better to do the work yourself- even if you are not an expert.

I worked at a water bottler in Kentland IN. They are a Canadian company. They bought the land and drilled a 12" well for the water to use. Then found out it's so full of iron they could not use it. So they used city water , which was treated well water, then they had their own huge iron filters.

But the iron came from a meteor strike that left a huge crater and upended the limestone layers to vertical. Nobody really knew until the 70's or so. the glaciers had wiped out the crater.

Wow- very cool story. My neighbors in the Midwest built later than me. How they overcame the iron well water was to drill much deeper. My well is 300 feet deep. Their wells are 1,000 feet deep. The story is at 1,000 feet, the water is coming from Lake Superior. True or not... who knows- but they have zero water treatment at 1,000 feet, and me at 300 feet have a whole house filer, iron filer, and a water softener.

Very true about iron in the water in the upper Midwest - well, at least, it’s true in Warsaw, IN, where my fiancée is from. I’ve stayed at a few Air BNB while visiting up there, and all of them that were on well water had iron as well as a lot of sulfur in the water. Gross. Not fit to drink and unpleasant to bathe in.

Potassium permanganate can be used to kill bacteria in untreated water. You can buy it in pre measured packets for camping/hiking etc.
