Web site says "this store becoming service only" for my 2 local stores. 40 percent off. Might be other stores. Maybe I'll go in, blow the dust off, and see if I can get a deal! getdown

They will probably start shipping a mechanic to do it.

Similar to what they do with tires- ship it to a shop that has a deal with Amazon for installs. Wouldn't surprise me.

I live in Franklin county and have been to both locations. Yes, the stores aren't busy, but less retail choice is never a win for consumers. Pep Boys has or had the largest selection of detail products at a brick & mortar. I found a Kozak cloth for my grandfather at the Morse Rd location a few years ago.

Actually, at least in my area, Amazon has an option you can click that says to add "professional" installation to several products, including many car parts. But I have actually used this service once upon a time for running in wall ethernet because the price came up so cheap ($45 for 5 runs.) Normally the prices are pretty high, $75 on the low end as high as $400 being charged when I ordered a starter for a friends car.

Yeap, I've seen that option on various parts I've looked at or bought. Even things like an air filter, they offered installation. Just checked that order and the item and no "service" is listed now.

Tirerack kinda does that now, you can ship direct to an installer with their prices listed.

Yup, my local PB store has put stuff on sale back in November of last year, in preparation for this. I think they're officially shutting down the store part sometime this month.

They actually bought a local garage and made it a service only location here a couple of years back...

I just used Amazon twice for ordering tires and having them installed by their suggested auto shop. Ordered 4 tires for the Fusion and 2 for the Explorer. It was $25 per tire for the install charge, which you pay to Amazon.

I picked an installer a few miles from my home and the tires were dropped shipped there. Amazon has you pick 3 install dates/times and I never heard back a confirmation from Amazon. When I saw the tires were delivered, I called the shop and told them I had Amazon tires I needed installed. They asked me when I wanted to come in.

Service was impeccable and I was in-and-out. No added charges, fees, or upsell. No money changed hands with the shop because they get reimbursed from Amazon.

I asked the shop if they install a lot of Amazon tires and they indicated they do. The only issue for them is, the tires just show up one day and there is no indication who they belong to or when they should be installed. The shop just waits for the customer to call and goes from there. You would think the customer's name and contact info would be on the shipping label, but it is not.

Well, the "Geek Squad" name is already taken.

This thread prompted me to read some business news on Pep Boys. Apparently they have been owned by Icahn Automotive for some time now and Icahn is loosing money on the auto parts retail business. It owns other brands as well (Auto Plus, Aamco, etc.). Icahn has announced that they plan to split the company into two pieces, one parts selling and one service locations.

I would think that auto service has to be a much higher margin business than auto parts. Techs make $20-40/hr and are billed at $90-$150/hr (depending on location). Auto parts has become a brutally price competitive business and is one I wouldn't choose to be in. High mix, high return rates, low margin ... yuk, that is a crummy business to operate physical stores in.

As consumers we are spoiled, which often means pain and suffering for those who sell to us.

The return/defective rate would be very high!
