As a forum user, I've never thought it my place, or even a decent thing to do, to report people or their posts in order to get them banned and try to control who can be a member. In fact I find it hard to imagine a life where I would feel the need to do that. I've used forums for over 20 years and have never once reported a post. Why? I think it's a goofy thing to do, if by goofy I mean jerky. I've participated on this forum since the server101 days, not so much in the past few years, and only with a single username at a time and boy have things changed over the years. As a die hard anonymist, I dont care about post counts or name recognition, my self-esteem is fine, and I can't imagine why that would be important to anyone, aside from self-congratulation. The discussion is all that ever mattered. Sadly, this has become impossible.. certain non-moderator members that clearly care about post counts, name recognition and heirarchical protection seem to clearly want to "homogenize" the board with only those sympathetic to their ideologies and a congregation willing to worship them. That's really too bad. The nature of this site attracts a lot of smart people with great information and awesome discussions have been had, but those people don't post much here anymore or very often. The arbitrage that is "politics" just seems to be a universal trump card. This thread by it's very meta nature, is probably politics if you think really hard and try to imagine it is. Shucks, it's probably provocateurism if you rationalize hard enough, despite neither of those being the intention. I think politics on BITOG might just be defined as "any unusual topic of discussion that makes the big posters (read: big reporters) mildly uncomfortable", and that's fine, just don't call it politics. Don't lie to yourself or anyone else.

But if this thread lasts a few minutes (which it wont, I'll be banned immediately, cheerio!) , it would be interesting to get other members' take on the issue if they would be willing to admit it: Do you report posts?

I don't report posts because I don't believe in censorship. Even if I am appalled by something you say, I still respect and honor your right to say it. Oh well...

Even someone who trolls the forum with multiple accounts, however lousy that may be, still shouldn't be censored in my mind.

I don't report posts, but I do call out [censored] when I see it. Then I get reported.

You’ve been here for a month, yet you claim to have been here for a long time.

So, which is it?

Please allow me to explain how things work:

Posts that violate the rules are removed.

Period.

Post count, name recognition, influence, whatever, are all irrelevant in the decision to remove a post. If the reported post is within guidelines, then it stays. Period.

Public whining, and presumption of influence on the part of the administrator, make you look bad, not the board. If a member hits the report button, a moderator will read the complaint and may, or may not, remove the post.

Go give this a read: https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/foru...26/bitog-standard-of-conduct#Post5289126

Only ever reported my own posts...sometimes to get them moved, other times when I've been asking for example my Movember fund raising, and twice when I've cooled down and felt I've crossed a line.

Been reported a lot 'though.

If it's the truth....it can handle the pressure !!!

No, quite frankly I've got better things to do with my life and time 😉.

Second, I've seen many of good members leave because of the behavior of others here,it's not the same forum as it used to be by far.

No surprise there, you're a decent guy RDY4WAR. I've always liked your experiential posts about engines/building.. you know your stuff and love that signature! Some others with much higher post counts can definitely learn a thing from you, about how to share information without being passive aggressive and cocky about it. Cheers2

I think it depends on what you want to add to this site.

I think its up to the members to self police and keep this site an informative and fun place to be. So I do report posts if they are way way out of line, like gross personal insults. It's rare however that i do this.

I also report spam when i see it.

I want this place to be fun and informative, and i will do my part to keep it that way. I'm sure i probably have had some posts removed in the past, and I've tried to be more responsible since.

I have also not reported some posts, and pm'd some members to either change their post to avoid being banned, or contact a mod themselves to have it taken down so they don't get permanently banned.

You and i don't own the site, and the rules have been clearly laid out.

So the choices are yours.

So pschnahc do you believe you got a post or posts reported and did you suffer a consequence as a result? it seems reasonable given this topic.

Right off the bat, I believe you've had an account here before that's been banned. I don't think many (or all, really) would be able to get enough posts reports/locked/whatever to feel this strongly in only 1 month of membership. That said, I've noticed that the people who have an issue with their posts being removed, threads locked, etc, generally probably need to step away from the keyboard for a while and get themselves centered on what's really important, and that is most everything that is not in their own control. If someone reports my posts, that's their prerogative. Whether I would report a post or think my post deserves a report is besides the point, if someone else feels the need to do so then that's their right. If a mod locks my thread, deletes my post, or whatever, then it probably needed to be done and if I can't understand that, then maybe it's me who needs to step back. I'm sorry you feel this way, as this can be a great site, but like all sites, some members contribute more than others and you can't let people get to you. By the way, I haven't been here long, but when I've seen a thread locked for political talk, it's usually been pretty obvious and very cut and dry. Ultimately, this isn't the forum for those discussions and allowing that talk in a forum not designed for that purpose does a lot more damage than locking threads or deleting posts.

pschnahc, your profanity laced PM to me is reminiscent of a former member here. I didn’t think you were him but I do now. You ask me what my motivation is here, well what is yours? Why is your posting on Bitog so desperately meaningful to to you that you feel you must have a voice on this board?

That was a really mean one to me by the way. I don’t mind being called out for technical inaccuracies and speaking outside of my competence, but wishing me death is a bit over the top isn’t it?

Reporting isn't about trying to get the person banned.

I've reported a couple posts. One was a racist post.
