I happened to change it when I first got the Trooper and thought why not put in the thicker Mobil 1 oil in there, but I think I will change it to a 0w-30 oil in a few weeks. It drives fine on the oil in the TC, but I am wondering how much extra drag this heavier oil creates as far as hurting the mpg.

I recently changed engine oil from 15W-40 to 0W-20 and will see if that makes a difference, before moving on to the TC.

None of the oil gets wasted, I just put old oil into our 98 Ford Contour which leaks it out from the valve covers.

Trying to get better fuel economy in that old Trooper is likely futile. You won't see any noticeable improvements regardless of what oil or transfer case fluid you put in.
