video 3.2L 1996 engine noise, loose valve, rod, other?

This is not my video but shows what the noise can also be. In his case, exhaust rocker arm shaft wore down. A small oil hole in the hollow shaft lubes the arm, it can clog. Why do they make these holes so small.

It seems an interesting but overly complex design, exhaust side uses 2 lever arms. The lash adjusters are in the ends of rockers arms where they push on the valves ( I think). There is a lot that can fail here, which is why every Trooper motor develops this noise.

Ever think engineers deliberately do dumb stuff to create future trouble for owners?

It actually sounds a little quieter. I will update this thread later as to if it goes away.

Likely thinned out the oil enough to get some flowing into the HLA's Hopefully it will clean them up for you.

If it does not go away completely, plan to live with it till it is due for a new timing belt, in about 40,000 miles. If we still have it then, when I replace the timing belt, I can pull off both cams and investigate for worn rocker arms and shafts and investigate the lash adjusters.

You cant remove the cams without tearing apart the front of the engine. These issues tend to resolve themselves sometimes by time or elimination of the vehicle. This is not an interference fit engine which is good.

I did feel for loose arms and did not notice anything when I had the cover off. But I also did not turn the motor.

Next day after 50 miles or so on seafoam added to the oil, the sound intensity has dropped. The noise is still there.
I can tell it sounds less noisy. I dont know how much of this noise will ever go away.

We have a 1994 Isuzu Rodeo and a 2001 Trooper. The oil that really helped quiet the Rodeo ticking was Rotella T 10W-30. The Trooper really likes Mobil 1 TDT 5W-40.

Some products to try: Lubegard engine treatment (they have a engine flush as well) and Hot Shot's Secret.

I tried the Lubegard in the Trooper, it was very quiet, and the product description says it helps with lifter and valve noise.

Hot Shot Secret has their two oil products. I am using the FR3 in my brother's 1997 Civic, it has helped quiet down valve noise.

I went to AZ and got some half priced synthetic oils. So I can change to that someday. One 5 L bottle is a 0w-40 made for European Mercedes etc...

Update, today after maybe 1000 miles, I changed oil to 0W-20 Valvoline full synthetic made for 2012 and newer engines.
The ticking is very much better even after just 15 minutes on the 0W-20 oil.
I am also hoping it improves the mpg, as it is so bad at 14.5 mpg on the heavier oil.

Here is the new oil

I may move to 0W-16 GF6 oil which is not out yet for sale, but promises big improvements in mpg.
Regardless next oil change will be a GF6 oil of 0W-20 or lower oil.

That lines up with what Isuzu recommended way back when the noise first started happening and they recommended Mobil1 0W30, it was probably one of the thinner oils available and probably had some cleaning ability. Reasons to think that an even thinner modern oil would be able to get into the HLA's even better.
