I just purchased this battery, Yuasa High Performance AGM battery, back in November and with the lack of snow or snowmobile trails open hardly anywhere, I have not used it yet.

Just wondering/curious if my Battery Tender JR is adequate/safe to use on this battery?

My routine has been to charge them once a month (if I remember?

) and let it charge for a few hours then repeat the following month.

Can the JR do any harm to this battery if I left it on for long periods of time, or, as some have suggested, either here or another site, should I just leave it plugged in/on charge constantly?

My last, exact same battery, wasn't that old but it didn't get a lot of use and I know I forgot to charge it regularly.

Just wondering if this Tender JR is the proper one to use for this type of battery or should I invest in something else?

Thanks in advance.

You battery tender MUST be set up for AGM, it should state so on it. It it is older than 5 years it may not be in which cas you need to get a new one for AGMs

Yes, that works just fine for AGM. Most modern smart/auto chargers are AGM compatible; this Jr will work just fine and you can leave it plugged in permanently with no ill effects as it automatically shuts off and turns itself back on as needed.

There is some thought that a battery conditioner that can do desulfation may also be a good idea. The Battery Maintainer brand offers similar products to Deltran except theirs include this capability.

The one he linked says specifically that it is AGM compatible.

A charger is better than no charger.

We're not talking lithium, where minor overcharge can cause massive failure and fire.

Some good background can be found here:

AGM will take a higher charge voltage. Float voltage, regardless of battery design, should be temperature compensated. And that's where IMO your charger falls short.

I like the battery tender waterproof 800mA and the original "plus" 1.25A model. The plus model is temperature compensated. The junior isn't.

Until recently, the only wall wart charger that was temperature compensated was the battery minder 1510 series. You can tell because it has a thermistor hanging off of it. I've generally been a fan of the battery minder 2012 series for flooded and agm, and the 12248 since it is totally selectable.

I'm currently intrigued by the latest NOCO black color genius chargers. They are claimed to be temperature compensated, have settings for 6/12V AGM, flooded and lithium variants. It also has SOC LEDs to refer to when charging up, which is kind of nice (would prefer an actual voltage reading personally).

Unfortunately the tender jr is a low end line, and while your AGM battery will be worlds better using it than not, personally I'd give the 1A or higher NOCO Genius new black chargers a try.

Thanks guys.

I just wrote down the info off of it as I couldn't tell you how long ago I purchased it? Likely 7-8+ yrs ago give or take?

It is a BT JR Model: 021-123, just like I posted above, which, according to the specs/info, is safe and compatible for AGM batteries and does have a float/auto on/off feature.
These are the output and Input numbers: Output, 12 VDC @ 750mA Input: 120 VAC @ 60 HZ 12W

FEATURES
Perfect for maintaining all 12V lead-acid batteries including AGM and gel cell
Complete 4-step charging program (Initialization, Bulk Charge, Absorption Mode, Float Mode)
Automatically switches to float or maintenance mode after fully charging the battery
Solid state two color LED indicates stage of charge
Spark proof
Reverse polarity protected
Includes a 12' (3.7 m) output cord

Personally, after reading it is compatible with AGM batteries, I'll likely just stick with this one even though there are likely better ones out there?

Thanks again for the info!

Northern Tool currently has this one on sale: https://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200332201_200332201

Careful. While northern shows this has the thermistor, battery minder has a number of versions with this part number that are not temperature compensated...

The one you linked to seems good but just want folks to be aware of the difference...

I have one of the ones from Nothern Tool and it is temperature compensated. I did see that BM does sell some that are not temp compensated, but they lack a T in the model name/number.
