Highest flow filter?

I contacted Wix about the Napa line for my Expedition. I asked them which filter had the highest oil flow rate?
1. 41372 Platinum
2. 1372 Gold
3. 21372 ProSelect

The lady told me that the threaded hole diameter is the same so they all have the same flow rate. That doesn't sound right to me. How does one filter list as stopping smaller microns but flow the same? Also the said they couldn't give me the micron rating of the Proselect because it was proprietary.

I want the filter that will get oil to the heads the fastest in my truck, which one would that be from the ones listed?

So you're saying the filter media determines that?
 
They will all get the oil to the heads at the same time all things equal.

I was asking, indicated by the question mark.
 
Oh I thought the question mark was about which oil, and that you had already come to the conclusion that the filter media had a primary impact on the pump output.

Just trying to wrap my head around how filter can stop more or less of something and still flow the same.

The filter is not the bottleneck of an engine's oiling system so flow rate doesn't matter. Whatever it is, it's high enough.
 
Since you called Wix.. i went on NAPAs website where the data is listed on each filter.
Also since Wix wouldnt tell you the Micron Rating of the ProSelect..it is listed on NAPAs site as well its 21

The surface area of the filter is much larger than the primary oil channel. The lady you talked to at Wix knew what she was talking about.

If a large enough pressure differential develops between the dirty and clean side, the bypass activates. So even an abused over extended clogged up filter will provide flow.

+1 kschachn & bryan. Positive displacement pumps don't care about filter media.

I saw that information.... It's not correct.
Look at the link for the 21372 again. The manufacture part number is 51372 the same filter as the gold.
They are using the same info as the gold to post as proselect.

Media design and holding capacity determines flow performance, and what the delta-p across the filter will be over its use period as it loads up.

Also, engines use a positive displacement oil pump so even if 10 filters had a slight difference in flow performance the oil pump is still going to force the same volume of oil through all of them. I'd worry more about the flow performance of an oil filter in terms of it's delta-p and bypass valve setting, not if it's going to "choke down" oil to the engine, because it won't because of the positive displacement oil pump.

Keep in mind that most oil filters are only about 1/15th the flow restriction than the engine's oiling system is.

It's nebulous "flow rating" info. If you really want to know how an oil filter flows, you need delta-p vs flow rate data at some defined oil viscosity/temperature, like this.

Not really. If the mounting spud hole was the determinant of the flow restriction in an oil filter, then every filter made would have the same delta-p vs flow curve. They do not.
 
No filter is a significant source of flow restriction in the oiling system.
Delta P is a measurement, but one that really doesn't mean much unless it's so high that the bypass opens.

The "not really" comment and explanation why that followed was about the gal at WIX knowing what she was talking about. She didn't know what she was taking about.
