Anybody CB? Advice on using car antenna for CB (and only CB)

Based on a suggestion I got from nthach about what to do with a now-surplus single DIN slot in this thread:

https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/foru...-din-replacement-drawers-etc#Post5298099

I am pretty sure I am going to put a CB in it. I can get a new Uniden 510xl and a DIN mount kit for it for about $50. Last item (budget is key) is to have a decent antenna, and not stray too much from factory look.

Unusually, I have a factory AM/FM antenna mast idle/surplus on the truck. Just a standard one that comes out of the fender. The reason is that the truck is an Acura SLX which came with a radio antenna in the rear glass. I had damage on my fender once years ago, and instead of repairing it, I just replaced it with the equivalent Isuzu fender (same color) off a Trooper (same truck, different badge). The Trooper came with a fender-mounted mast antenna, which I just left in place for possible future use. I put the am/fm lead coiled in a plastic bag, sealed it and left it inside the inner fender liner. So as Carl would say, "I've got that goin' for me. Which is nice..."

a) Can I connect it straight to the CB (w/o splitter, since no radio is on the line)?
b ) Do I need a wholly different antenna, or different length?
c) If a diff. ant., do they make ones that will thread into a narrow antenna mount vs. the 3/8" ones?

IDK if it's helpful, but this is the antenna I want to use/adapt, if it's clear in this pic (best I could find handy):

It doesn't work that way with radio signals. Antennas are tuned to be optimal in certain frequency ranges and CB is different than FM/AM. The higher end CB antennas have an adjustment feature to help tune, and the radio has a SWR tune function as well to get everything working optimally. I'm sure if you connected a random metal rod to the antenna port it would work, but you won't be optimizing the distance capabilities of your CB. I think in extreme cases, improper tuning of your CB antenna could event result in damage to the radio.

That antenna is for receiving , not transmitting. You could damage the radio.

Get a k40 or k30 atenna. Even then you will need to tune the SWR.

the smallest antenna I would use is a lil will from Wilson antennas. comes in mag mount so install is easy. been into cb for decades in a big way. the lil will is what I run on my sorento.

You want it on good ground plane like the middle of the roof and the highest elevation possible. More money and time should be spent on the antenna.

Yes. This antenna or the Wilson 1000 mag-mount. Both are simple and effective.
The problem is: who are you going to talk to these days? Very few have a CB in vehicles or in their homes these days. You're 4 decades too late.

Basically, everywhere off road in my state where it is helpful, and sometimes required with off-road groups. It actually opens up trail trips to me that I cannot do before.

What I'm looking for is advice on how to turn the factory antenna mount into a useful antenna. Are there adapters, or aftermarket and is already designed to go into a conventional mount?

I understand the SWR for tuning; I won't use a magnetic mount or wacky external adapter. I do appreciate the recommendation for an effective SWR tuner.

The problem with a CB to car antenna splitter, if they still exist, is the power loss in trying to match the impedance of the car antenna to the 50 ohm output of the CB.

Google "AM/FM & CB Radio 3-Way Antenna Splitter."

So the fender has a hole in it already? What diam is it? I wonder if a NMO could be snuck in there, or worse, an SO-239 based setup.

You will also have to buy a spring base, like this...
https://www.amazon.com/Firestik-SS-3H-Stainless-Antenna-Spring/dp/B00042LC9M/
And, the CB antenna itself...
3 foot https://www.amazon.com/FireStik-FL3-B-FireFly-Antenna-Tuneable/dp/B005AUJXLM/ or
4 foot https://www.amazon.com/FireStik-4ft-Black-Firefly/dp/B000QB917Q/
And, the cable with connectors...

Unfortunately, nobody sells anything like this in an all-in-one kit.

Some interesting stuff right there.

I had a FireStik SS-204 on my Camry, in the jamb between trunk and fender, and that worked well for a 3/8's mount. I did drill holes for it, but you can't see the holes with the trunk closed.

My truck, I found an L bracket that would sneak an NMO out from under the hood and that worked well. It went under a fender bolt, and when I removed it one never knew it was there.

Great, that's what I was thinking of now - things like wag123 posted.

Now that I see the am/fm antenna is not a good idea, I'll just remove it and adapt a proper CB antenna into that mounting point instead. I have a lot of time after the 26th and I'll take the inner fender liner out, existing mount out, and see what I need to do.
