10w30 HDEO or 15w40, others. What's in your engine?

I use Delvac Super 1300 Semi Synthetic 15W-40 in my 1983 Mercedes 240d and will be using that same oil in my 1984 300SD mercedes as well when it hits 255,000 miles on the next oil change. I'm using Amsoil AME 15w-40 in my 1995 E300D. The other 2 diesels are real soot loaders, the 1995 is not. So it gets an oil that will last longer. I'll do an UOA just to make sure for all of them. I did a UOA on the 240d @ 15,000 miles using the Amsoil AME and Blackstone labs said to try 17,000 miles the next time. I went 10,000 miles on the 300SD and Blackestone labs said to go 11,000 miles the next time but I not going to do that as the soot level was at 1.7 % and Mercedes said the limit was 2%. I'm just going to use the Delvac and go 10,000 miles and then I'll let the UOA tell me what to do. On the 1995 E300d I'm going to do a UOA @ 10,000 miles with the Amsoil AME and go from there. It has electronic fuel injection so the soot loading is much less. ( .2% after 15,000 miles) I also have a 1988 mercedes 300e gas engine that I used a 15W-40 travellers oil in it. I went 10,000 miles and sent a sample UOA in and it came back with a really good report but it used a quart every 3,000 miles so I went with Mobil 1's 15W-50 to slow down the oil use but it still uses a quart every 3,000 miles. I'll just go back to the HDOE 15w-40 after my supply of 15W-50 is gone. I also have a 2008 Toyota Sienna that I use Mobil1 5W-30 EP in it. I go 20,000 miles per oil change. I use the Fram Ultra in that van. The van just hit 334,000 miles yesterday. BTW, the 240d has 316,000 miles the 300SD has 252,000 miles on it the E300d has 164,000 miles on it and the 1988 E300 has 257,000 miles on it. They all run very well and I'm pleased with all of them. Thank You, Bill

Looks good to me - its usually around $19/gallon at Walmart....about the same as the Rotella T6 5W-40 (which IMHO is a better oil than the Rotella T6 15W-40).

On paper the Rotella T6 5W40 has a slightly lower pour point and slight higher flash point than the Delo 5w40. I have not personally used Delo since they lowered the Z & P, just watching the UOA's for a little while.

Some of both-T5 10W30 in the GMC in my sig, and also in the HF Predator 13 HP engine on the log splitter, 15W40 (a little of multiple leftovers, PB ProLine, Pennzoil Gold, Delvac 1300) in the F-450, and Delvac 1300 in my brother's '67 283 SBC in his Jeep.

I'm a pretty big fan of the Delvac Super 1300 15W40, but I think it's not a synthetic blend, that's the Delvac Elite 15W40-but keep doing what you're doing, my '82 300D Turbo loved the stuff!

I've got a variety,Valvoline premium blue 10w30 in the new Kubota 2501,Rotella T-5 10w30 in Cub Cadet,Travelers 15w40 in theYamaha and Honda 4wheelers,Valvoline 15w40 HM in the '78 F-150(on sale $7 per gallon),Rotella T-4 15w40 in the Ford 601 tractor(on sale $24 for 2 1/2 gallon jug).All my power equipment gets some kind of HDEO with high zinc,just because.

I've been using MC 10w30 since I bought my truck. I let the truck tell me when to change. I found three 6 gallon Bags in a box MC10w30 this past summer for 50 bucks each at a local oil distributor. This current oil was the first oil of those to be used.

After viewing A Harman's last UOA on Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15W40, I'm going to give Chevron Delo 400 XLE 15W40 a try in my semi truck with a 12.7 Series 60 Detroit motor.

I think this is my 3rd OCI back with Delvac Super; I do a pm service every 13,000 to 15,000 miles/350 to 450 hours, but I don't do a UOA every time I do a PM. I'm definitely going to send off a UOA this time to see how it did, because I'm really curious.

The CJ4 version of MD1300S did really well, when I first bought my truck new. In fact, comparing UOAs between 15W40 CJ4 and CK4 Delvac 1300 Super and CJ4 Delo 400 LE, then CK4 Delo 400 SDE, the results were incredibly similar.

I know A Harman's engine and operating conditions are quite different than mine, but on the surface, it looks to me like the add pack in MD1300S 15W40 *could be* a bit weak. -Just my guess, anyway. And WM's price per gallon on Delo XLE 15W40 is well within my budget.

I'll run the Delo 400 XLE 15W40 for about three OCIs, send in a sample, compare it's performance to MD1300S 15W40, and go from there.

First post, finally. Currently using Motul Tekma Mega X 15W40 on my 17 6.7 Cummins. Seems to like it a bit more than the Rotella 5W40 that I was getting some burning with (couple of quarts every 12k miles). We will see how next change goes.

You're doing the right thing. Change it (10K or sooner) when you can and Happy New Year on the other side of the world.

Hello! I called the Mobil Super 1300 a Semi Synthetic because that's what the mobile website said it was. It does have a 9.8 TBN per the website as well. Also, ST 15W-40 per Walmart has a TBN of 7.41 per PQIA. I don't know for sure but I think the ST was a conventional oil. I use the ST for makeup oil and I use the Delvac for when I change the oil.

Three Mercedes 5 cyl. IDI diesels - two turbo, one N/A. Scheffer's 5w40 in one of the turbo's, Rotella T5 10w30 in the other two. I'll be doing a UOA at 4,500-5K on the turbo motor running 10/30 to make sure it's doing well and, hopefully, disprove the fear/denial many have about deviating from 40 weights in these motors.

My Series 60 Detroit motor currently has 15W40 Chevron Delo 400 XLE syn-blend in it's sump. Zero changes in consumption since I switched from Delvac Super 1300 15W40.
