98 Forester rear wiper is squeaking, but not between the blade and the glass. Instead, the squeaking is from where the wiper arm rotates

Original wiper arm, and a new Trico Tech wiper (a private label version of the Trico Flex). It isn't sweeping the whole area the wiper is supposed to sweep, so the arm may already be on its way out.

Would this go away when the wiper arm is replaced? And what kind of lubricant would be best to use on the wiper arm pivot? It is mounted below the glass, so there would be no danger of any oil getting on the glass.

Assuming the nut is tight and the arm and the shaft are moving as one piece like they should, replacing the arm would solve nothing. The problem is in the motor.

You could try putting oil or grease on the shaft bearing, but since it isn't doing the normal range of motion that would mean the motor is worn out.

Does the car ever go through an automatic car wash? If so, the arm may be bent or worse. Check it carefully. See if the nut is tight against the spindle and the car body. There may be a way to lubricate. As far as the blade, OE is best for rear windows.

It is doing the normal range of motion, just not contacting the entire portion of the glass.

The wiper is 15 inches, but at the top of the glass, in the middle of the wiper's travel, there is an inch loss where it isn't contacting. At the bottom of the glass, inwards towards the center point, it is fine.

I don't know the history of the car. The nut is tight.

It sounds like the arm got bent or damaged somehow. Car wash or two legged varmint is my guess.
