I Catch Colds at the Drop of a Hat Ever Since ...

A gym is a really good place to catch a cold or the flu. I had a membership for about 3 years and never had so many colds in my life. I replaced the membership with a treadmill and a weight machine in my family room. Problem solved.

I was getting 3-4 / year until I hit my 40s then it tapered off to 1 or so a year. I started taking a Vitamin D 1000 IU supplement a couple years ago and that seemed to help although I was slightly deficient from last blood test.

Sounds like you could do more cardio at the gym. 10 minute miles are really a fast walk and probably aren't getting your heart rate up very high. Is your routine something a trainer made for you or stuff you like doing? If you're going to spend the time might as well make it as beneficial as possible. Improving your cardio and pulmonary systems lead to better overall health instead of bigger stronger muscles.

I used to be the same with colds. Got them hard anytime weather was cold. Guess what.
Tooth infection that took years to turn into an abscess. Went under the radar for many moons.
Since fixing that - 1 cold a winter, rarely bad, more energy and all the good stuff.
Go to a good specialist. Remember ears, nose(sinuses) and throat(mouth) are 1 system - stuff next door may be the culprit, an ongoing inflammation can go a long time causing trouble next door.
Vitamin C stuff is a myth BTW, any semi-healthy diet has more than your RDA. Only an immune issue if you dont get enough of.

Just some thoughts. Sinus problems, sinusitis, allergy, virus can mimic the common cold. Generally if it is a cold virus discharge is clear, usually not running a fever. Rusty discharge is usually bacterial, Klebsiella, greenish usually Pseudomonis sorry to gross you out. Bacterial sinus infections can be treated with antibiotics, viruses cannot. Sinus problems can cause symptoms in upper teeth, usually one sided, difficult to locate to one tooth as in an abscess. Sometimes we will go back and forth between the dentist and the ear nose and throat for sinus problems. Sinus can cause tooth symptoms, but will not infect a tooth. An infected upper tooth can cause sinus problems and infection.

Some other thoughts after reading your post, you are getting up twice per night to pee, another two times a night due to unknown cause, probably accident injury to C6-C7 to adjust neck. I will bring up the subject of sleep apnea which is the periodic and episodic cessation of breathing. You stated you do not have daytime fatigue which is a symptom of sleep apnea. You seem to be living a healthy lifestyle. Sleep apnea will lead to a decline in the immune system, making you more susceptible to colds and illness. Sleep apnea is usually accompanied by snoring. I am not suggesting you have sleep apnea but I have encountered numerous patients who wake up at night for "no reason" are waking after an episode of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is easily diagnosed now with a take home device eliminating the need for a "sleep study overnight" It is treated with a CPAP device, or sometimes a removable mouthpiece.

You need to go to a better gym or just wash your hands more often. Been going to the gym for years and hardly ever get colds. I always wash my hands afterwards and the gym I go to, there's always people around cleaning all the equipment..

My biggest thing is I sweat easily when working outside. If it's cold, I eventually cool down and get chilled and that's when I catch a cold.

Hasn't happened this year thankfully, but it hasn't been too cold either. Upper 20's at the lowest.

I was thinking this exact thing, he's definitely coming across some of these colds at the gym.

That's not how it works. While you can't catch the exact same strain again because you've developed antibodies, the 200 some odd cold causing viruses can and do mix. So you may have immunity against strain A and strain B, you may not have immunity against strain A/B..or strain A/B/C/X/Y/Z. You see now why a vaccine for the cold has eluded researchers? There's simply too many possible combos. They're trying to find something about cold causing viruses that any strain or combinations of strains, have in common. The company that solves that problem will obviously make trillion$!!

You're not catching a cold from the cold. It's from a virus. Maybe your nose is running and you're touching nose/eyes with dirty hands full of viruses.

Also they're working on a universal cold vaccine, they just never spent that kind of money developing one before but it might not be too long now before it happens.

My 3hrs a week cardio rehab is in a hospital and many of us have compromised immune systems or are recovering from bypass surgery. We are required to wipe down the machines with alcohol wipes after every use.. I'm on the hunt for a used treadmill, so I can continue exercise at home. I''ve had a free flu shot and a free pneumonia shot this fall..

I would suggest a gym quality treadmill from Craigslist. They're typically in the $1000 or less range, but they used to be 7-10k new. They're meant for the gym where it could get hours of use every day, but at home, 10-20 years of use is probably less than a year at the gym. The 220 volt models are cheap as most people don't have that at home, but it's easy to convert an outlet to 220, just need to change the plug and get a double pole breaker for the panel or just put in a new outlet if your treadmill is going to be on the first floor or the basement.

I second everyone's comment about how gym's can affect your health. I had similar problems and had to drop the gym because I just couldn't use it anymore. Guess what?? Noticed I was not getting sick as often, or hardly ever. Stay away from the gym. Got a treadmill from Smooth Fitness....they only sell on the internet, about 5 years ago. Thing still rocks and has a lifting mechanism that will lift up the treadmill part off the floor and store itself vertically, freeing up a ton of room. 110V.

I guess it could be due to the sleep problems, I wake probably at least four times per night, twice to whiz and at least twice for no apparent reason other than to shift my head around to a better position on pillow(s) because of a stiff neck in the area of the C6 and C7 which were the fractured ones. That would be the trauma related osteo arthritis the neurological MD said commonly develops in cases like mine.

I don't feel tired through the day, so I don't think the wake-ups at night are that big of an issue.
It is a known fact that lack of quality sleep (or enough sleep) compromises your immune system.

I don't feel tired through the day, so I don't think the wake-ups at night are that big of an issue. I do have a titanium rod in the marrow of my right humeris bone (elbow to shoulder bone) from the accident that I wonder if my body is somehow reacting to, by the bone marrow system scaling back on immune response or something. We do know bone marrow is key to immune response, and sometimes the body can have unusual reactions to various types of implants. The surgeon played it down and said they rarely remove those rods "unless there's a problem."

The surgeon will downplay it but you shouldn't. Ti implants are considered stable, in the same way Aluminum because of an oxide layer, but galvanic corrosion is yet still a significant issue with biological Ti implants of all kinds even tiny dental ones. Ti ions in the body are known cytotoxic.

Here is an excerpt from a study investigating (much smaller) dental Ti implants including 'extra-oral' health effects. Remember, this study focusses on tiny Ti dental implants, not even big ol' rods of it.

Quote

The metal ions may cause staining of the peri-implant tissues and reactions, like perioral stomatitis, osteolysis,
oral edema, and extra-oral manifestations, such as fatigue, hair loss, eczematous rashes, and even
episodes of brain-fog have been reported. Kirkpatrick et al. reported the patho-mechanism of the
impaired healing occurs due to specific metal ion release by corrosion [8].

You can catch a cold anywhere. Ultimately I think it's a reflection on personal hygiene. Wash your hands often and keep them away from eyes, nose and mouth. Much simpler said than done.

Been going to the gym for years. I usually get a cold once or twice a year although once I think I went a couple years without catching a cold as when I went to use my cold medicine, it had expired a couple years ago.

As stated earlier it could be allergies. Increase your intake of plant matter, fish twice a week Omega 3's are key. Flax seeds are a good source and eating them will improve the quality of the environment in you gut for good bacteria this is important. Plenty of fiber drink a lot of water. If you think you drink enough water you are not drinking enough.

Also I am a big believer the use of ice baths and sauna's.

I used to get sinus and ear infections all the time, ever since I was a little kid. The dr told me to start using Flonase because she said allergies can manifest into colds and sinus infections. Since the Flonase no problems!
