SFA 85....Duke 83!!!!!!

SFA is one of the stealth teams that don't show on a lot of majors radar, but have knocked off some big ones lately in the NCAA tourney. SFA beat 3 seed West Virginia, beat 5 seed VCU, and had Notre Dame beat until the final second. Duke just learned something about SFA!

Congrats to your team, well deserved win. Coach K already knew about SFA which is why he scheduled them. This time of year he schedules teams of the caliber they may typically play in the 1st or 2nd round of the NCAA tourney (assuming they get that far). If he wanted a cupcake game he would not have put FSA on the schedule. Hopefully Duke learned something about themselves too.

Congrats to SFA, especially so for winning on Dukes home floor. Looking at the SFA website, their team consists of many 5th year Seniors who are junior college transfers and have been playing college basketball for 4 to 5 years with loads of experience. SFA has 21 and 22 year old players with no freshman or sophomores starting. Though Duke has many talented blue chip 18 year old High School players, they start 4 true freshman and 1 sophomore. Number 1 Kentucky lost to Evansville a few weeks ago in similar fashion. It's hard to second guess coach K, but Vernon Carey was on the bench in Dukes last two possessions and no timeout was called on Dukes last possession to set up a play. But, as always, the cream rises to the top when March Madness rolls around.

Speaking of cupcake games at Cameron Indoor Stadium... NW Missouri State, Fort Valley State, Colorado State, Central Arkansas... the #1 ranked team in the country could do lots better than this.

Mixed into that, a game with Kansas, on a neutral floor... to help protect the home non-conference winning streak.

SFA fixed that intentional scheduling plan.

You failed to mention that Kansas was #3 when then #4 Duke beat them. Duke also beat Georgetown in that tournament. Duke plays Mi State next week. It would make no sense to schedule a lot of top 25 teams against each other this early in a 35 game season. Half the top 25 teams would drop out before conference play even begins. That's what the early season holiday tournaments are for. Mi State was preseason number 1.....before losing to Va Tech. Number 1 Kentucky lost to Evansville in Rupp arena a few weeks ago. Last years NCAA champs UVA barely beat Arizona State this week. Most small D1 schools are honored to play in these historic venues win or lose. Winning against a number 1 team on their turf is something these players will never forget, and good for them! All top teams schedule a lot of under dogs so when David slays Goliath, it makes the college game even better and beating a class act such as Duke and coach K makes it even sweeter! As I stated earlier, the cream rises to the top in March!
