Many cars just use the horn for a harsh beep when you hit the remote. Some newer cars like my neighbours BMW and my Subaru make a soft clicking sound when you lock or unlock with the remote. Is that from a separate speaker underhood? Does anyone sell such a thing aftermarket? I'm adding RKE to an older Mercedes and would like a soft chirp instead of tying into the horn.

You might try this one, leave the black loop intact for a low volume chirp, cut the loop if you ever want to restore full volume chirp:

The 514N will be about your best option for a good soft chirp siren, and really is the only one I know of nowadays. I have installed these and they do have a lower volume chirp but the siren is still pretty loud when the alarm is triggered. Alpine made the best soft chirp siren I ever worked with, but Alpine got out of car security years ago.

So these speakers can be programmed to chirp? Will see if they give a sound clip anywhere.
It's a 6 tone siren that plays each of 6 different siren sounds for maybe 7 or 8 seconds each. You can remove the 2 screws holding the cone into the horn and pull out the cone and you see 6 little wire jumpers on the circuit board. If you want to delete any of the siren tones, just cut its respective jumper. There is a black wire loop coming out the back of the siren, you cut that loop if you want to have the full volume on chirp. I always liked the second tone by itself, it sounds more like a traditional car alarm. There may be You Tube videos online to hear what they sound like.

Every car I had with keyless entry would lock or unlock the doors with one press of the button(if you listened you could hear the locks cycle. The horn only sounded if you double clicked the buttons.

All of the ones that I've had, except the '03 MGM in my sig-it always does it on the first button push of the remote.

fords seemed too loud, years ago. toyotas quieter. many others are far too loud.
Factory RKE will use a separate piezo for the lock/unlock sounds in most cases. Some will chirp the horn instead or if the lock button has been pressed twice to "confirm" in loud environments.
For an aftermarket RKE/remote start there's a brown wire that can tie into the factory horn to honk it for lock/unlock/engine start and if you have the alarm function, a second output to drive a siren. I would imagine you can grab an OEM piezo or horn from a newer car and with some wiring/relays have it serve as the the siren/horn. You won't get the same chirps as say a new Mercedes but it will sound like one if done right.

I was able to silence the verification on my Nissan through the remote. The lights still blink. I was obligated to do this since I didn't like disturbing the neighbors at my condo.

Since I'm ADDING keyless entry to the car, there won't be anything in the owners manual about it.
in that case - if the keyless entry system you're adding only does keyless entry without security, the brown wire can be connected to the horn or a external piezo.
And after some reading, it looks like the Mercedes anti-theft system siren only does the soft lock/unlock chirps via the data wire from the anti-theft module. The siren is rather unique as it does have some electronics and a backup battery/capacitor to keep on sounding.
