My low mileage 1986 Dodge Omni uses the amber color power steering fluid. The old bottle I have from 1992 has the part number 4318055. This met Chrysler spec MS 1872. It is no longer made. The owners manual and the service manual specifically say not to use automatic transmission fluid otherwise there will be damage to the system. Does anyone know if there is a replacement for this amber colored PS fluid? The dealer did not. I know this PS fluid was used by Chrysler at least through the mid-1990's. Thanks.

There are many power steering fluids that list being suitable for use where MS-1872 is (was) specified. If that is no longer a current specification then all you have is something that claims compatibility.

You'll see Amsoil and other fluid manufacturers group MS 1872 (Amber/Clear) together with the later spec MS 5931F (also Amber/Clear). The current Valvoline MS5931F product is Part No. 602241, and it is Amber/Clear:

This is what I'm currently using in my 2001 Dakota, which was supposed to, according to the FSM and other specs, have come with ATF+4 but did not, I bought it new and it came with an Amber/Clear fluid. I replaced it with Valvoline 602241 several years ago and have zero problems with the Power Steering (well, after replacing a busted host a couple of years ago) all this time.

If you are cautious I would call Valvoline and confirm that this product covers MS1872, but I recommend it.

When I had a 2002 Neon I used ATF+4. That is what I had for its transmission. I had the A604 and stuck with ATF+4 or one of the licensed fluids.

By 2002 it was safe to switch to ATF+4. Indeed your 2002 should have come with ATF+4 (but like my 01 Dakota yours may be an exception). Not so with earlier models like the OP's, best to stick with the original type fluid.

Would atf+4 also work as a substitute for PS pumps that use dexron 3? The viscosity is very close, but I'm concerned about the friction modifiers. I've been curious about that for a while now.

Good question.

Very few PS pumps have clutches so if those PS systems used a Dexron ATF I can't see any reason for not using ATF+4.

In fact, until rather recently, the big 3 auto makers speced their transmission fluids as fluids for Power Steering systems as well.

If one is concerned with PS pump and rack wear in HD vehicles, this stuff has the most AW chemistry I have seen in a PS fluid:
