I'm also amazed at how much body damage costs to repair.

Auto insurance did not go up here in Colorado Springs as home insurance did after that hail storm in 2016. Now home insurance companies calculate hail deductible as % of dwelling. Basically deductible today for hail damage is more expensive than paying out of pocket for new roof.

I dunno. With $40k vehicles running all over the place and the cost of repairing humans now, it's expected to be higher than it used to be.

To me, insurance should be expensive at the beginning and then decline as you move on. Why am I paying just a little less than someone with recent claims when I haven't had a claim in 15 years? shrug

I've been with USAA for at least the last 20 years. This spring my wife was involved in an at fault accident that totaled out our van and the vehicle she hit. At that point, I also doubled and/or tripled our amount of coverages (liability, property damage, medical, etc.) and our premiums actually went down. Doesn't make any sense to me, but I was very happy our rates went down instead of up...

Now days, if the repair requires more than just a quarter panel, the vehicle will likely be totaled...the cost of body and paint work is beyond ridiculous...

Yea my only two wrecks ever. First was I was driving at night had a seizure and hit a guard rail. That was my first seizure and when I discovered I had a brain tumor. The second one was my fault entirely I was leaving parking spot and there were cars everywhere and a dumpers in front of me about 15 feet away then a truck parked on the other side of the dumpster as I went to leave it was cramped and I hit the curb with the rocker panel. Was literally doing 1 mph and was still on the clutch but it was 2,700 worth of damage. So yes the only two wrecks on my record are in the last 3 years.

Sorry if this comes across negative but after three pages you then disclose the fact you have a seizure disorder? Now you question the insurance rates?

I do hope your seizures are under control but the insurance companies will see this as added risk and consider that in their premium rate.

It's the same with life insurance. Risky activities like hang gliding and sky diving add risk. That is the way it goes.

The insurance isn't aware I have a "seizure disorder"
Also that's a very poor term. I had a brain tumor that caused a host of concerns I no longer have the brain tumor. So even if they did know it's no longer even an issue. I have never had my license taken or any of that for it either. I was lucky in that regard.

I suppose the high cost of insurance is just another example of givers and takers in society.

I've been hit by a few drunk degenerates with no license / no insurance / no job, etc.. in their $500 dollar car.

Literally causing more financial damage in a matter of seconds than they can ever produce in their lifetime.

Several opposing forces:

--folks have plenty of fender benders these days everyone being in a rush with crowded roads, cell phones ringing, texts arriving and appointments that need to be made in addition to other activities while rushing on the roads.

--After the fender bender, they want their car to be returned to pristine condition, perfectly matched paint with no distortions in the metal when looked at under sunlight, very expensive to repair

--People desire cars with all kinds of functionality that rely up many sensors, electrics and computers to control it all, again expensive to repair.

Our automobile insurance premiums need to be high enough in aggregate to pay for all of these very expensive repairs. It doesn't take all that bad of an accident to total a car these days. And insurance companies do not have a perfect crystal ball that allows them to accurately predict who will be having these costly accidents. License points, age, credit score, miles driven annually, telematics, etc. can be helpful in predicting who is more likely to have these accidents, but it is still a toss at a dart board to some degree. Insurance companies use the information they have and rely on the law of averages over many policyholders.

I'm with you on that here in Oklahoma. Wife was hit twice in OKC. Sure enough, they had no insurance. Luckily I maintained full coverage on all the vehicles, paid off or not for that reason. I've since added uninsured motorist, which with State Farm, automatically included underinsured motorist as well. We actually had one lady that hit my wife have the nerve to send us a letter and a form that basically states that if she made payments to us and we sign this form, she would be able to get her license back so that she could drive. Of course that letter included all the boo-hoo stuff like she's disabled, has 4 kids, etc. etc. Yeah, right, like that was going to happen. I'm out a deductible and insurance company is out about 3K.

The 6mo premium for my 2016 Nissan Quest is ~$317 w/ the kbb value being around $9500, yet my 2015 Nissan Vera's value is only about $5K and the 6mo premium is $320. My point being, it's all about the statistics for the particular vehicle. It's wise to get an insurance quote ahead of time.

Minivans tend to be reasonable to insure, given their size and capacity.

Pickup trucks are fairly high. I think my 2017 Ram 1500 4x4 is ~$420 for 6mo and it's a base model truck.

I have what I'd call mid grade coverage through Allstate. Yearly bill just over $2000 for the above 3 vehicles. Soon to skyrocket given I've got one driving age kid and two more soon behind.

If you don't shop every 5 years or so you're throwing money away.

Now you know how insurance companies can afford all those football TV commercials.
