My neighbor asked me to help him with an oil change for a 2005 BMW X3 that his lady friend drives. I know it specs the BMW Long Life 5w30 or 5w40. Are there any acceptable alternatives like Mobil 1 or MaxLife Synthetic? Thanks in advance!

For an interval that short the M54 will do well with almost anything. I was running Cam 2 semi syn 5/30 in mine for a while before I sold it, no problems with a 5k interval at all. It started using a little oil, so the new owner runs 10/30 winter or 15.40 in the summer. Gets the cheapie Formula shell from Home Depot

Then M1 FS 0W-40, Castrol 0W-40, Pennzoil 0W-40.

Castrol 5W-40 and Pennzoil 5W-40 still carry LL-01.

Not a suitable spec. The M54 needs a minimum HTHS of 3.5.

You need an A3/B4 oil.

So what's the recommendation for something that is readily available?

Roofless answered above.
M1 or Castrol 0W-40 are available at most auto stores, Wallmart, Amazon, etc.

That won't cut it.
Get Castrol 0W40 or Mobil1 0W40 in Wal Mart.

Here you go: LL-01

Yeah I fail to see where that was the recommendation to him anywhere in this thread. What an odd and inexplicable statement.

Castrol 0W-40 is currently $20.98 for five quarts at Walmart. Mobil 1 0W-40 is $22.88 and there is a rebate available.

That is harder to find in US than Castrol 0W40 or Mobil1 0W40. Plus, it goes for like $9 for quart or $8 for a quart on Wal mart online.

Yep … PPE went on clearance here and I have already used that stash …
The other two are at every Walmart within a 200 mile radius I travel
