Oil Selection for Hyundai Veloster N - newer engine, limited existing oil data

Great car! Thanks for the write up. I'd run an xW-40 grade and get a UOA at 5,000 miles. I ran a Mazdaspeed 3 for 158,000 miles and was told repeatedly that I would ruin the engine with a long OCI. I ended up running M1 5W-30 for 7,500 miles and the UOAs indicated a 10,000 mile OCI was plausible. That said, I would definitely see what a few UOAs indicate if I planned to run the oil past 5,000 miles.

Thanks for all the input! I wound up doing the change with the oil I had, which was 8100 X-Clean EFE, as based on the advice here it sounded like this was an acceptable choice. Here's the UOA (they are running TBN as I forgot to initially ask for this.) This is with the older generation Hyundai filter ending in 04, a 5.2k OCI, and the car being driven like a total and complete nut (sump temps of 250F were not unusual with extremely hard driving.) There was no oil consumption that I could detect. Fuel was exclusively Shell and Exxon 93 AKI detergent gasoline.

I'm no expert here, but based on Blackstone's summary and perusing this forum, this looks pretty good for a new engine, and (provided TBN also looks good) the oil appears to have performed pretty well?

As a 2018 Hyundai Kona AWD 1.6T owner who had ONE LSPI event on the factory fill and 87 octane, now I run 91/93 most of the time with some 89 here and there. You may want to get an oil that has 1,200 PPM of calcium or less. Some of these 5w-40's can have 2700 to 3000+ Ca. I think your car gets full boost 17psi at 1,400 rpm like mine does. You may want to keep your oil change in the 3,500 range since I found I had some soot. I have gone through different oils, but I think I will be now running 3 liters of Delo XSP 5w-40 and 1 qt of Redline Euro 5w-30. To get some more zinc and ester. I dump at 3,500, I am on boost more then most. In the upper midwest winters and my short tripping (-10 to 0 F) I get fuel dilution over 5% ( Polaris Labs) so I dump at 3,000 In the winters, I will be running Delo XSP 5w-30 and a qt of Redline Euro 5w-30 in the winters. I will be doing a UOA on the next oil change since I still have residue from the Amsoil SS 0w-40 that I wanted flushed out before doing a UOA.

This remarkable oil is most likely the factory fill.
Made by SK & Shell as per Hyundai/Kia Spec

Good luck finding it.

Shell is Hyundai World Rally Team's sponsor (and actual supplier?

), so I would not be the least bit surprised by the above.

My personal recommendation would be Shell Helix ECT C2/C3 0W30. It's an ACEA C3 oil meaning it's a thicker 30 weight and will have a HTHS of 3.5mPAS or higher but it also meets the fuel economy requirements of ACEA C2. It's a Group 3+/GTL based oil with a number of approvals such as VW 504/507 and LL04. It's available in the US as a Penzoil oil, I'm unsure what it's actual name is in the US.

+1

Really good oil indeed

Even with it being a turbocharged motor, if you are fixated on changing it at 3000mi due to fuel dilution, I'm not so sure synthetic basestocks are a necessity. I think you could do well with a syn blend.
