This fuel is a viscous oil, has a dark brown to black appearance, and is usually mixed with 10% of another, lighter fuel to promote flow.

It may contain 1.5% to 4.5% sulfur.

It can have two names but what is the most common name?

This question is NOT open to Engineering disciplines, Tribologists, or Chemists.

Bunker or residual fuel oil. Largely will be banned for use in marine vessels beginning next year.

I would have guessed the above but unless molakule mis-stated I thought it was limited to 3.5% in 2012.

Good showing folks and it is Bunker fuel oil for naval ships. Also called, "Heavy fuel oil.'

Bunker oil is the residual oil that remains after gasoline, diesel, and the lighter hydrocarbons are extracted from crude oil during the refining process.

There are three types of Bunker fuel and they are Bunker A, B, and C. Bunker C is currently the most common form of Bunker fuel.

Bunker A is commonly referred to as marine diesel or marine gasoil.

Bunker B is a vacuum residual oil and is the heaviest of the cuts, is the "bottom of the barrel" and also requires some lighter oil to be mixed to allow flow.

Sulfur content may range from 1.5% to 4.5% depending on local regulations. Eventually. the International Maritime Organization wants to get it down to 0.5%, but the lower sulfur fuel is expensive.
