If you click through to the authors you'll see they have published many papers on ballistics analysis.

This just appears to be a fun take on the subject.
 
When I went to middle-school, a potato-cannon was a science project for one student. No issues occurred, I do believe it was fired on school property as well, lol! Oh how life has gotten lame in so many ways.

The Punkin' Chunkin' stuff got way out of control when contestants starting growing their own pumpkins in tubes that were the same diameter as their cannon barrels!
I suppose by now they have even figured out a way to rifle the bores and put a bullet nose on the pumpkins.
